Once every ten years, the world-famous Passion Play returns to Oberammergau. The 2030 season marks its 43rd staging.
The play is a vast open-air production telling the story of the last days of Christ, and it has been performed in this one Bavarian village since 1634. Its origins lie in a vow: the villagers promised that if the plague passed them by, they would stage the Passion every decade. They have honoured that promise ever since.
Some 2,000 villagers take part, on stage and in the choir and orchestra, all of them residents rather than professional performers. The play runs for the better part of a day, in German, on a covered stage with the Alps rising behind it.
