This coach holiday brings together the treasures of Italy and the highlights of southern Germany. In Italy, you’ll stand beneath the leaning tower at Pisa, walk in the shadow of ancient Rome, discover the riches of Vatican City and visit Assisi, home to the great Basilica, with time to settle into the rhythm of Tuscany and the shores of Lake Garda.
The real highlight, though, is the world-famous Oberammergau Passion Play. Performed only once every ten years, it depicts the story of Christ’s suffering, death and resurrection, acted out by the villagers themselves. It is an event not to be missed.
There is Germany to savour too, from the medieval towns of the Romantic Road to the vineyards and castles of the Rhine Valley.

An included full-day visit to Rome and Vatican City. We begin in the Vatican area, where you can discover the treasures of St Peter’s Square, the setting for some of the most important Papal ceremonies. There may also be time to visit the impressive Basilica of Saint Peter at the heart of the Vatican.
Afterwards, enjoy free time in Rome, or why not join our optional guided sightseeing tour by coach and on foot, for a glimpse of sights such as the Trevi Fountain, the Colosseum (entrance not included) and the Piazza Venezia.

Today we have an included visit to Assisi, known for its famous Basilica. One of the greatest Christian shrines in the world, it is the burial place of St Francis.

We leave Chianciano and call into Florence, where you will have some free time to relax and explore this marvellous city, known for its art and its outstanding Renaissance architecture.
In the afternoon, we continue north to Lake Garda, our base for the next two nights.

Today is a day to relax and enjoy the simple pleasures of life around this beautiful lake.
Alternatively, join our optional tour along the eastern shore, visiting some of the towns and villages that sit at the water’s edge, with mountains rising behind them. Spend time exploring the narrow streets of the old villages or relax in one of the many cafés.
We also see the ancient fortified town of Sirmione, the gem of the peninsula, at the southern end of the lake. During your time in Sirmione we will take to the water and sail along the Sirmione peninsula, with picturesque views of the surrounding area from the lake itself.

We leave Lake Garda and travel north over the spectacular Brenner Pass from Italy into Austria, then through the mountain pass into Bavaria, arriving late afternoon at our accommodation in the Oberammergau area for a two-night stay.
Enjoy a relaxing evening ahead of tomorrow’s spectacle.

This morning, enjoy free time in the environs of Oberammergau. Lunch will be at noon before the start of the Passion Play.
The play has a running time of approximately five hours in total. The performance begins at 2:30pm, concluding around 10:30pm, with a three-hour break at 5:00pm when dinner is provided. After the performance, you will be transferred back to your accommodation.
The play is traditionally performed in German, and a textbook with the complete play text is included.

We leave Oberammergau after breakfast and travel north through Germany along the Romantic Road, calling into Rothenburg ob der Tauber, one of Germany’s best-preserved medieval towns.
Enjoy free time to relax before we continue to our hotel in the Frankfurt area for an overnight stay.

Our route takes us through the picturesque Rhine Valley. Our first call is at Rüdesheim on the banks of the river. The heart of the old town is the Drosselgasse, a narrow cobbled street lined with restaurants and wine taverns.
As we venture north along the valley, you will have the chance to join an optional sightseeing cruise, taking in the views from the river.
We then continue to our overnight hotel in Belgium.

Accommodation
You will stay for five nights in Chianciano Terme at a hotel such as the 3-star Hotel Ambasciatori or similar. In Lake Garda, you will stay for two nights at a 3-star hotel. You will also stay for two nights in the Oberammergau area.
Overnight stays in Belgium, northern France, northern Italy and central Germany will be in city-style hotels.
Your Choice of Accommodation in Oberammergau
All our holidays include accommodation in either Oberammergau itself or the surrounding villages, so you can arrive in Oberammergau in good time before the play. We offer a choice of accommodation including hotels and guest houses which have been graded by the Passion Play committee according to the facilities available. All categories of accommodation will include shower or bath and WC.
There are three different accommodation categories to choose from (subject to confirmation from the committee):
Category D: 2-star hotels or 3-star pensions/guest houses
Category C: 3-star hotels or 4-star pensions/guest houses
Category B: 4-star hotels or 5-star pensions/guest houses
Exact details of accommodation will be confirmed closer to the time.
