Oberammergau Passion Play & Bavaria's Fairy Tale Castles
This coach holiday pairs the emotion of the Oberammergau Passion Play with the scenery and architecture of Bavaria’s fairy tale castles. Our first stop is the village of Hohenschwangau, home to the celebrated Neuschwanstein Castle, whose hilltop setting looks out across the countryside towards the royal castle of Hohenschwangau.
There is time in the walled town of Füssen, where narrow lanes and terrace cafés invite an unhurried afternoon. In Innsbruck, the ‘capital’ of the Austrian Tyrol, regal architecture sits beneath a backdrop of soaring Alpine peaks.
The holiday culminates in the Passion Play itself. Staged once every ten years by the villagers of Oberammergau, it recounts the story of the Passion of Christ across a performance of around five hours – a deeply moving experience, and one not to be missed.

Local departure by coach or Door-to-Door service, then to Belgium for an overnight stay.
We head through Germany to reach our hotel in the Reutte area of Austria for a three-night stay.

A day to discover fairy tale castles on our included excursion. Firstly, we visit the village of Hohenschwangau and King Ludwig’s famous castle, Neuschwanstein. Built in the 19th century, the castle is dramatically perched above the valley with panoramic views over the countryside and the royal castle of Hohenschwangau.
Please note: at Neuschwanstein there is a degree of walking involved, as well as a considerable number of steps to climb.
In the afternoon, we visit the delightful walled town of Füssen, where you can spend time exploring the maze of narrow lanes or simply relax in a terrace café in the main square.

Today’s included excursion takes us east to Innsbruck, the ‘capital’ of the Tyrol. Set with a backdrop of soaring Alpine mountains and fine regal buildings, it is a major winter sports city, having hosted the Winter Olympics.
We see the internationally renowned ski jump, Bergisel, where you can marvel at the courage of the jumpers – it’s even more frightening than it appears on TV!
The Golden Roof is testimony to the time in the 15th century when Innsbruck was at the centre of European culture and politics, and Emperor Maximilian I based his Imperial Court here. Today you can enjoy its relaxing squares and vibrant shopping streets.

This optional excursion is available to pre-book or you can book during your tour.
We leave Austria and travel to the Oberammergau area to check into our overnight accommodation. Lunch will be at noon, ahead of the Passion Play.
The play has a running time of approximately five hours in total. The performance begins at 2:30pm, concluding around 10:30pm, with a three-hour break at 5:00pm when dinner is provided. After the performance, you will be transferred back to your accommodation.
The play is traditionally performed in German, and a textbook with the complete play text is included.

Accommodation
You will stay for three nights at the 4-star Hotel Zum Mohren in Reutte, situated in the centre of Reutte, within walking distance of the River Lech. You will also stay for one night in the Oberammergau area.
Overnight stays in Belgium will be in city-style hotels.
Your Choice of Accommodation in Oberammergau
All our holidays include accommodation in either Oberammergau itself or the surrounding villages, so you can arrive in Oberammergau in good time before the play. We offer a choice of accommodation including hotels and guest houses which have been graded by the Passion Play committee according to the facilities available. All categories of accommodation will include a shower or bath and WC.
There are three different accommodation categories to choose from (subject to confirmation from the committee):
Category D: 2-star hotels or 3-star pensions/guesthouses
Category C: 3-star hotels or 4-star pensions/guest houses
Category B: 4-star hotels or 5-star pensions/guest houses
Exact details of accommodation will be confirmed closer to the time.
Hotel Zum Mohren
This 4-star hotel, owned and run by the welcoming Ruepp family, is situated in the centre of Reutte, within walking distance of the River Lech. The hotel combines traditional hospitality with excellent modern facilities. Enjoy the culinary delight served in the restaurant, relax with a glass of wine in the bar, or spend time in the excellent Wellness area with swimming pool, Finnish sauna and steam-bath. Whilst in Reutte, those with a head for heights should head to the world’s longest rope chain bridge – 405 metres long and 11,270 metres high – which links Ruin Ehrenberg and Fort Claudia.
