The story of the Jacobite rising of 1689-1746 is steeped in myth. Frequently and wrongly presented as a series of Scottish rebellions against the British, the Jacobite cause was, in fact, a nationwide, indeed a continental movement aimed at putting Catholic Stewarts back on the British throne following the ‘Glorious Revolution’ of 1688, which had brought in the Protestant William and Mary. Allowing the mind to wander among the mist-enshrouded hills and glens it is easy to imagine a picture of remote fortresses besieged by wild clansmen robed in tartan plaid, of columns of redcoats marching through sheets of rain of fearsome highland charges and savage battle. Romance aside, there is much truth in all of this. The first rising, in 1689, though was, in fact, a short lived Scottish civil war. Of the subsequent insurrections against the united British Government, that of 1745 came closest to achieving the aim of the Jacobite cause but ended in its devastating defeat and dreadful reprisals. Meeting in Edinburgh, Dr Michael Jones will trace the story of the 1745 rebellion through some of its major Scottish battlefields, visiting also some sites of earlier events.

Meet at Edinburgh Waverly Station at 13.00 or Edinburgh Airport at 13.45hrs. We will then visit Prestonpans, scene of the first major Jacobite victory in September 1745. Continue to Stirling for a 2-night stay. Group dinner and Introductory talk.
