Local departure by coach, then to our hotel in Belgium, where we stay for four nights.

Walk 1: Fromelles

This morning we walk the battlefield around Fromelles looking at both the 1915 action as part of the Aubers Ridge Battle and the 1916 operation when Australian and British troops attacked. We start at Le Trou Aid Post Cemetery and then examine the fighting for the Sugar Loaf Salient, before walking down to VC Corner and the Australian Memorial Park, seeing a memorial to the fighting in 1915. We then go into Fromelles for a visit to Pheasant Wood Cemetery.

Walk 2: Loos

The Battle of Loos in September 1915 was the first time large numbers of men from Kitchener’s Army went into action on the Western Front. We start at Le Rutoire Farm, a headquarters in 1915, and then walk out to The Lone Tree, and on to the battlefield cemeteries in the area, ending at the Hohenzollern Redoubt.
