Walk 1: Fromelles
This morning we walk the battlefield around Fromelles looking at both the 1915 action as part of the Aubers Ridge Battle and the 1916 operation when Australian and British troops attacked. We start at Le Trou Aid Post Cemetery and then examine the fighting for the Sugar Loaf Salient, before walking down to VC Corner and the Australian Memorial Park, seeing a memorial to the fighting in 1915. We then go into Fromelles for a visit to Pheasant Wood Cemetery.
Walk 2: Loos
The Battle of Loos in September 1915 was the first time large numbers of men from Kitchener’s Army went into action on the Western Front. We start at Le Rutoire Farm, a headquarters in 1915, and then walk out to The Lone Tree, and on to the battlefield cemeteries in the area, ending at the Hohenzollern Redoubt.
Key Visits
Walk 3: Arras to Monchy
We walk the ground connected to the fighting at Monchy-le-Preux in April 1917, starting at Monchy Cemetery, looking at the Cavalry attack, visiting one of the isolated cemeteries here and then walking into the village and out to Infantry Hill where the Newfoundland Regiment fought.
Walk 4: Arras to Wancourt
We walk from the village of Guemappe following the fighting here in late April 1917, up onto the high ground near Wancourt Tower, visiting Wancourt Cemetery and seeing some of the battlefield cemeteries in the Heninel area, close to where the Hindenberg Line ran in 1917.
Key Visits
Walk 5: Cambrai
Our final walk follows the fighting during the Battle of Cambrai in November 1917, starting at the village of Havrincourt, seeing Grand Ravine Cemetery near Havrincourt Wood, and following the tank route up and onto the Flesquières Ridge.
After lunchtime in Cambrai we return to Flesquières for a visit to the Tank Museum, and visit other Cambrai battlefield sites in the area as well as the Cambrai Memorial to the Missing.
