Ghent Highlights
The Fortress of Gravensteen
Also known as the ‘Castle of the Counts,’ the Fortress of Gravensteen is the only remaining medieval castle with a moat and intact defence system in Flanders. Originally built in 1180, the castle has housed a courthouse, prison and dungeons, and visitors can now view ancient torture equipment at the museum.
St. Bavo’s Cathedral
With a rich history and plenty of art treasures to discover, St Bavo’s Cathedral is a must-visit. The interior is decorated with some unique paintings, and you’ll find the world-famous "Adoration of the Mystic Lamb" by Jan van Eyck in the chapel built in the crypt.
Graslei and Korenlei
One of the most beautiful areas in Ghent, the medieval quays of Graslei and Korenlei face each other across the River Leie. Soak up the atmosphere in one of the many bars and cafés, admire the grand architecture of the guild houses or simply watch the world go by.
