With picturesque decorations and an enchanting atmosphere, we visit the lovely Christmas market of Bolzano – one of the largest in Italy. A feast for your eyes and taste buds, you will see hand-finished gifts, exquisite cakes and confectionery, and fine wines on offer – there's definitely time for a sample or two! We will also enjoy a delightful journey through idyllic mountain scenery to the lovely spa-town of Merano. Here, enjoy the Historic Christmas Village and stroll through the charming medieval arcades. With the chance to also visit the pretty markets of Vipiteno and Bressanone, both brimming with lights, colours and a fairy tale atmosphere, this magical festive holiday will leave you with lasting memories!

Today we visit Bolzano, where you can visit the lovely Christmas market, considered to be one of the largest in Italy. See the grandly decorated Piazza Walther and the indoor area where local craftspeople demonstrate their skills, taking in the unique advent atmosphere. Admire the traditional Christmas tree and the nativity display, or sample the local gastronomy; find mulled wine, strudel, exquisite confectionery and cakes on offer. You will also find hand-finished decorations, wood carvings and local liqueurs on sale here.

Today's optional excursion takes us firstly, to the alpine town of Vipiteno, where you can enjoy the charming Christmas market located in the shadow of the celebrated Torre Delle Dodici Tower. Beneath the Torre Delle Dodici, you can see the Christmas crib exhibition with handmade products. The town is brimming with lights and colours, and a fairy tale atmosphere prevails.

Later, we continue to Bressanone, home to one of the prettiest Dolomites Christmas markets. The traditional wooden chalets boast a picturesque setting in Piazza Duomo square, between the cathedral, town hall and San Michele Church. See local arts, crafts, candles, glass and ceramics, or, why not try a winter-warming mug of steaming mulled wine?

Today, our included excursion takes us through beautiful castle-clad mountains to the delightful spa-town of Merano – famous for the therapeutic properties of its waters. The historic centre is the oldest and liveliest district of the town. See the ‘Historic Christmas Village’ at Piazza della Rena, and why not try a warming local drink or dish by the fireplace at the centre of the square? Stroll along the charming streets and visit some of the many shops which are mainly concentrated in the medieval arcades.

The Passeggiata promenade stretches along the Passirio River and invites you to take a pleasant walk in all seasons of the year; you will come across some great historic buildings such as the Kurhaus and the bridge that takes you to the famous thermal baths.

During your visit to Merano, be sure to treat yourself and sample some of the pastries in one of the chic coffee shops – you won't be disappointed!

We leave our hotel and commence our return journey through Germany, and on to our overnight hotel in Belgium.

You will stay for four nights in either the 3-star Hotel Lady Maria, ideally located in the centre of Fondo, close to Lake Smeraldo, or its sister hotel, the 3-star Hotel Panorama in neighbouring Malosco. Both hotels have a lift, bar and restaurant, and are owned by the Bonvicin family who have been welcoming Leger guests for many years. Overnight stays in Belgium are in city-style hotels.
