Located in Franche-Comté, Montbéliard revives the tradition of Württemberg with their Christmas market. It is truly like no other, with 140 lovely stalls full of authentic and high-quality items. This morning we take a drive to the village of Mouthe. Here, the micro climate guarantees a good covering of snow all winter! We then continue onto the Source du Doubs waterfall.

Afterwards, in a typical Jurassien setting, we discover the polar park, a unique place to get close up to reindeer, yaks, bisons, chamois deer and more!

We then head back to our hotel for a special 4-course Christmas lunch with drinks included.

This afternoon, we take a drive around the high plateaux of the Jura mountains before enjoying a guided visit of a typical eco museum in the village of la Chapelle des Bois. Here, you can learn about life in the mountains through the generations.

We then travel back to the hotel via the picturesque Lac de Saint Point, with stops at the most beautiful viewpoints along the lake and a discovery of the quaint fishing hamlet of Port Titi.

After breakfast, we visit a traditional cheese producer. The cheese maker will talk us through the secrets of the trade of this famous region's Comté hard cheese, typical of this area. In winter they produce the famous ‘Mont d’Or’ soft cheese, which you will be able to taste.

Then, we enjoy a quick photo stop at the stunning Chateau de Joux which, for centuries, has guarded the route between Switzerland and France. We then continue to an absinthe distillery in Pontarlier. In the 19th century, Pontarlier was the world capital of absinthe, or ‘the green fairy’. Here, we learn about the history of this infamous alcohol followed by a tasting of local spirits (for those brave enough!). We return to the hotel for lunch with drinks included.

In the afternoon, we discover the importance of salt (‘white gold’) to this particular region of France since the Middle Ages. We drive through the pretty Vallee du Lison with a walk to the breathtaking Source du Lison waterfall and make stop at the small spa town of Salins les Bains. Here, we will have a guided visit of some spectacularly vaulted 13th-century salt cellars to learn how this vitally important natural resource is made. Salt was literally a matter of life and death, as it was key to preserving food. By the 17th century, the Grande Saline saltworks produced 14,000 tons of salt a year, regenerating half the region’s income and supplying the whole of Burgundy, Franche-Comté and Switzerland.
