Local departure by coach, then to our overnight hotel in Belgium.
In the autumn of 1944, the Allies reached the defences along the Westwall, or the ‘Siegfried Line’ as they called it. We begin at the Siegfried Line on the German border crossed by American troops, seeing the Dragon’s Teeth defences. We then continue across to the Hürtgenwald battlefield, which one observer called ‘Passchendaele with tree bursts’. Here we follow the story of this bloody battle in the forest visiting the Hürtgenwald Museum, seeing the traces of frontline positions in the woods, as well as seeing the German Cemeteries at both Hürtgen and Vossenack, one of which pays tribute to an incident when a German officer gave his life to save a GI laying wounded in a minefield. We then continue to our hotel near Duesseldorf for three nights.

We also discuss the Airborne story with an examination of the ground where the glider and parachute forces landed during Operation Varsity, seeing the Drop and Landing Zones as well as where the fighting took place. We also visit the Rheinberg British War Cemetery.
