Today we include a visit to Salzburg, one of the most beautiful cities in Austria. Salzburg has something to offer every visitor, from lovely squares and medieval lanes to Gothic churches and quaint cafés. The city dates back to Celtic times and prospered in the Middle Ages on account to the salt industry from where the city derives its name. Many beautiful Baroque buildings are a testament to the city’s illustrious past when it was controlled by the powerful and wealthy bishops. The city is also famed in the world of music, as the birthplace of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and more recently as the setting for the film The Sound of Music and is also home to the Getriedegasse, one of the most beautiful shopping streets in Austria.

Why not join our optional guided walking tour to introduce you to the city before spending the afternoon at leisure? Accompanied by our local English-speaking guide, the walking tour lasts approximately 90 minutes and takes in the many sights and attractions of this famous Alpine city.

Our included excursion takes us into the old salt mining region of the Salzkammergut Lakes, which has developed into one of the most popular destinations in Austria on account of its outstanding natural beauty. We visit the crystal clear Lake Mondsee, one of the largest lakes in the region and also one of the warmest.

We spend time in the delightful and principal resort of Mondsee, located on the banks of the lake. Mondsee is home to the Basilica of St. Michael, the famous wedding church where Maria married Georg von Trapp in the film The Sound of Music. This Gothic former monastery is just as striking today as ever with its two towers stretching 52 metres high. The basilica reached international fame when the wedding scene, with Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer, was filmed inside. This is the reason why more than 200,000 people visit the church every year and make it one of the most photographed churches in the world. Almost every day a wedding takes places at the church, so don’t forget to applaud if the newly-weds emerge from the church whilst you’re there!

We continue to St. Gilgen, birthplace of Mozart’s mother and home to one of the most attractive town squares in Austria. Here you can stroll along the lakeside, explore the shops or relax in one of the cafés. This afternoon we visit Hallstatt, one of the most photographed spots in Austria.

Join our full-day included excursion to the Imperial City of Vienna, which is without question, one of Europe’s great cities. As the home of the former Habsburg monarchy and the present day capital of Austria, it has much to charm the visitor.

There is a lot of walking involved to see all the sights, so why not let us introduce you to Vienna on our optional guided sightseeing tour? We begin by coach, where we will be taken along the Imperial Boulevard known as the Ringstrasse. Here you will see the Hofburg Palace, the Parliament building, the Opera House, National Theatre and City Hall. During our tour we will also see the majestic Danube River, and later as we pass by the Prater amusement park a chance to view the famous Giant Wheel, built over 100 years ago, and today one of the most well-known landmarks of the city. There will be frequent stops during the drive, where you will have photo opportunities and the chance to admire Vienna at its very best.

Our guide will provide commentary throughout, revealing the history, culture and stories of, without question, one of Europe’s most fascinating cities. Following the tour you will have time at leisure to visit many of the city’s famous landmarks, or you may decide to sit back and relax with a traditional Viennese coffee and a slice of the local Sachertorte chocolate cake in one of the city's tempting street cafés – the choice is yours!

It is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and a lively cosmopolitan town with a unique atmosphere surrounded by unspoiled countryside. Dominated by a castle stretching over the meandering Vltava River, Ceský Krumlov's narrow cobblestone streets wind along romantic nooks between patrician houses. Here you will find cosy inns, coffee shops, and ancient taverns.

On a clear day there is a panoramic view of the glistening Salzkammergut Lakes including Wolfgangsee, Irrsee, Mondsee, Attersee and Traunsee. We descend the mountain and spend time in the pretty village of St. Wolfgang. We then continue to Bad Ischl, the former summer residence of the great Austro-Hungarian monarchy. The whole experience has been very professional from the start to the end, we thoroughly enjoyed the tour, seeing the beautiful lakes, Salzburg , Vienna and Cesky Krumlov. Great value we were out every single day seeing something beautiful.

The positives are that Austria is a beautiful country and we were taken to some beautiful places. The negatives are that the hotel was poor quality, especially the food. Our journey from the Austrian lakes to Belgium took 13 hours. During that time we were off the bus less than 90 minutes. More suitable for transporting cattle than people. The second day of our journey home involved a 2 hour delay of our feeder bus which was heading to Exeter. The delay was made worse by diverting the bus around London in the traffic jams on the M25 to drop one person off. My wife and I could do with another holiday to recover. My advice would be if you want to visit Austria, fly there!

Tbis was the first foreign holiday we have taken since the pandemic and it was so very disappointing. I agree with everything CATL says in her review. Firstly we had a lot of delays at Dover which were no fault of Leger but unfortunately affected the first two days of our holiday. We had a lovely room and view at our resort hotel but the food needs to be sorted out. Breakfast was acceptable but dinner was poor most evenings. There was no choice - one vegetarian and one meat meal. After a long day out most people look forward to their evening meal. Some people were leaving it on the table and walking out and I must admit one evening we handed ours back as it looked so unappetising. We were then given the vegetarian option. Past reviews of this holiday have mentioned the poor meals but obviously Leger are not listening as they are still using the same hotel and I see it appears on bookings up to 2025. In the past we have always travelled with Shearings (not to be confused with the Shearings in name only run by Leger) and had many lovely holidays but unfortunately Leger are not in the same league. Some of the excursions were too expensive for what was delivered and everything was so rushed. Some places we were given a long time to explore when really the place did not warrant it whereas others that did, we did not get much time there. From our experience of this holiday it appears that Leger are only interested in the money making side of their business with very little thought given to the experience of their customers. We do not think that the holiday we have just taken represents good value for money and unfortunately we will not be travelling with Leger again which is a shame as we have always enjoyed coach travel but this time unfortunately it left a lot to be desired.

Original itinerary looked okay but a significant change at short notice and with no explanation regarding our first overnight hotel meant a negative two day start to our holiday which failed to meet our expectations. Austria is a lovely country and we look forward to returning but not with Leger.

So many things could be done to improve this trip. Starting from the very beginning where my name was not even checked onto the feeder coach from Sheffield, through to the chaos that is Dover and onto a four hour journey into France, leading to not getting to the hotel until well after midnight that whole first day was a bit of a disaster. This had a knock on effect to the next day where we had to start later for the drivers and consequently another late arrival at our hotel. The hotel was basic and meals often served cold or luke warm. I paid for all of the optional excursions but feel these were overpriced, (over 750 Euros taken for a simple walking tour!) The guide for the tour in Salzburg was excellent but the same cannot be said for the Vienna tour. The bus tour of Vienna was just a tour around traffic jams accompanied by statements such as "Look to your left between the gap and you'll see the palace." We were shown modern towers belonging to insurance and law firms - not the reason I had wanted to see Vienna. The guide was not coherent in her presentation, not because of her accent, but because she jumped around in the history and gave little explanation. We were then left with less than two hours to get something to eat and look around before needing to be back on the coach. I loved the excursion to Cesky Krumlov, although I feel giving the drivers more information about the place, such as how to get tickets for the castle etc, would have helped other passengers who missed out because they didn't realise you had to buy a timed ticket to get in. I also loved the train up the mountain and was thankful that another passenger had asked the drivers to park near the Summer Palace in Bad Ischel as again you could only go in on timed tickets and we would have missed out if they had parked in the town centre. Our return journey was again marred by bad planning. There was no where to stop for lunch during a ten hour day through Germany and up to Belgium. While our coach got on the intended ferry the next day, we then had over a three hour stop wating at Stop 24. Where we were lied to by the announcer several times. She told us all the buses had all arrived when clearly they had not. She blamed French border control even though we had sailed through that no problem. As my bus was the last to leave we were held up again because they didn't want to get the cases on in the rain. When we eventually got on this coach the driver told us they had just arrived as they had had to pick up drivers in France one and half hours away from Calais and had so missed the boat. Then one of the ferries broke down before the ferry they did get on had difficulty docking due to high winds. Thus proving it hadn't been there nor was it anything to do with French Border control. I feel this is an easy option for the staff to blame French Border control rather than admitting it was bad organisation on the part of Leger. Surely there is some way to have spare/extra coaches or minibuses at Stop 24 that would help get passengers to their onward destinations quicker especially after long journeys. I heard one passenger comment as she got off that she had spent thirty hours on that coach and was glad that nine days of hell had ended. Although my feelings are not quite so disturbing, I do feel disappointed with the trip overall. With better planning, hotel and cheaper excursions I would have given a higher rating as Austria was beautiful and it's a shame that two days at either end of the trip spoilt it.
