Cruising Andalucian Treasures & Portugal's Algarve by Air

A cruise on the Guadalquivir and Guadiana rivers takes you to the most renowned sites in southern Spain. The Guadalquivir flows through south-western Europe and the Spanish autonomous community of Andalusia, allowing for a great tour of not only its capital, Seville, but also historic towns such as Jerez, Cádiz and Granada, enjoying the traditional flamenco and the delights of the local gastronomy. Embark on a journey combining local culture, European history and picturesque stopovers, including Seville with its Plaza de España, a square decorated with azulejos and built especially for the Ibero-American Exhibition of 1929; Cádiz, one of the oldest cities in Europe; Granada and its Moorish monuments and palaces; and Cordoba, home of the Mezquita — a vast mosque with a cathedral rising at its centre. To truly capture the feeling of 'mañana mañana', you travel in maximum comfort on board CroisiEurope's premium ship, MS La Belle de Cadix, sailing the Guadalquivir and the Guadiana.

Today, enjoy free time in Seville, or why not join our optional excursion to Cordoba. Cordoba's golden era started in the 8th century when it was conquered by the Moors who built around 300 mosques and countless palaces and public buildings, rivalling the splendours of Constantinople, Damascus and Baghdad

In the 13th century, under the reign of Fernando III the Saint, the Great Mosque of Cordoba was transformed into a cathedral and new defensive structures were built, namely the Alcazar de los Reyes Cristianos and the Calahorra Tower.

Join us this morning for an optional guided tour of Seville and discovery of the Alcazar and the cathedral. We start off our visit with the azulejos that adorn the Plaza de España before we move on to the Santa Cruz district. Sheltered behind the former perimeter wall, what used to be the Jewish district belongs to the historic heart of the city and is surrounded by the most famous buildings of the Andalusian capital.

Afterwards, we discover the Alcazar, one of the oldest Royal Palaces in Europe. The visit will end with Seville's cathedral, providing one of the last testimonies to the Gothic style. This structure was built over the ruins of an Almohad mosque as a symbol of the capital's prosperous status of great commercial town after the Reconquista.

The afternoon will be spent sailing towards Cadiz.

Tonight, join our optional Flamenco evening onboard our ship. Flamenco (cante flamenco) is an art created by the Gypsy and Andalusian people based on popular folklore borne from the various cultures which flourished throughout the centuries in Spain. Immerse yourself in the most famous Spanish tradition!

The tour will continue with a visit to a 'ganadería'— a property where bulls are raised — and the chance to learn about this living symbol of Spanish culture.

We return to our ship for lunch, after which, why not join our optional guided tour of Cadiz, a wonderful town of white and blue buildings which is an astonishing mix of historic and cultural wealth.

We have breakfast as we cruise, continuing our journey along the Guadiana, sailing up river to Alcoutim. As we sail, we cruise past fabulous landscapes and villages that time has forgotten. We arrive mid-morning in Alcoutim, a typical Algarve village.

We have some free time before returning to our ship for lunch. The cruise departs once more for Vila Real de Santo António, where we arrive later this afternoon.

We have free time in Vila Real (the town centre and beach are close to the mooring), or you can join an optional excursion to Faro. We begin our visit with the cathedral (entrance not included). Originally built as a church in the 13th and 14th centuries, Saint Mary became a cathedral in the 16th century. A few elements still remain from the original church including the bell tower and two chapels at the crossing of the transept.

After a tour on foot of the old town, we head to Tavira. White walls, Moorish-style doors and roofs are characteristic of this lovely coastal town, crossed by the river Gilão and boasting several beautiful bridges, including Ponte Romana with its seven Roman arches. We return to our ship in Vila Real de Santo António.

Enjoy an evening of Fado entertainment on board. We start cruising this evening and cruise through the night towards El Puerto de Santa Maria.

We arrive early this morning in El Puerto de Santa Maria where you can enjoy free time or join our optional tour of the Osborne cellar and tasting of local wines.

Our tour begins on foot, with our hostess for one of the oldest bodegas in the region, the Osborne Bodega, which began producing wine in 1772. The iconic Osborne bull silhouette has become part of the landscape in the area. We enjoy a tasting of three different wines along with some regional products.

This afternoon, we cruise to Isla Minima, passing the Doñana National Park — designated by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site and a Biosphere Reserve — and the city of Sanlucar de Barrameda.

After dinner, we visit a typical Andalusian hacienda located on the banks of the Guadalquivir. Admire the beautiful architecture with its impressive Andalusian patio and watch a horse show in the private arena.

At the end of the evening, we will return to our ship and sail through the night towards Seville.
