São Miguel is the largest island of the Azores, known as ‘The Green Island’, and has a huge variety of scenery from lakes to beaches, hills, green plains and blue oceans. We have a leisurely day with a morning walking tour of Ponta Delgada with its charming heritage, narrow cobbled stone streets, manor houses and small palaces, accompanied by a local guide. Our tour will take in local sights such as the gorgeous 15th century Mother Church (S. Sebastião), the Town Gates, City Hall and Republica Square, Convent of Our Lady of Hope from the 18th century and São Bras Fort. Lunch is included at a local restaurant.

Ponta Delgada Walking Tour

Our full-day tour, accompanied by a local guide, visits Furnas Valley, where volcanic activity is still visible and hot and cold mineral water springs can be found. Walk around Furnas Lake to discover the hot thermal springs, and stroll through the ‘Terra Nostra’ Botanical Garden, reputed to be one of the most beautiful parks in the world. We enjoy a ‘Cozido’ lunch at a local restaurant – one of the dishes the ‘Cozido’ is cooked using large pots which are lowered into volcanic holes, and the contents are slow-cooked using the thermal heat. In the afternoon we continue to the Gorreana Tea Estate, Europe’s oldest remaining tea company, a family run company which has been in operation since 1883. Tea growing began in the Algarve around 1820, and as the orange trade in São Miguel weakened, the amount of tea produced increased, until the 1850’s when around 250 tons of tea was produced from 300 hectares of land.

This afternoon we enjoy a half-day ‘Magic Faial’ excursion visiting the Caldeira do Faial, a vast crater of the extinct volcano from which the island originated. This area is surrounded by lush vegetation, and is classified as a nature reserve. Later, we head to the Capelinhos area where an off-shore volcano erupted in the 1950’s, covering the Ponta dos Capelinhos lighthouse in ash. The lighthouse was the only surviving structure and over the years has slowly reappeared from the ash.

Magic Faial

Join our full-day excursion to Pico Island, accompanied by a local guide. We travel to Horta harbour for the short ferry crossing to Pico Island. Pico, the second largest of the Azores islands, is dominated by Pico Mountain, which at 2,351 metres is the highest point in Portugal, and became a nature reserve in 1982. Wine production began in the 15th century, with vines cultivated in the mineral rich lava soil. We arrive at Madalena and see the Landscape of the Pico Island Vineyard Culture, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In the 18th and 19th centuries, the island had a strong whaling industry – although this ended in the 20th century, and the focus switched to whale watching. Discover the picturesque ports and the small streets with typical homes, which are a reminder of those times, before we return to Faial. We enjoy lunch at a local restaurant, and an included visit to the Whalers Museum.
