Today’s optional excursion takes us along one of the most spectacular roads in Europe, the ‘Amalfi Drive’. The winding cliff top road offers breath-taking panoramic views at every bend. We pause above the beautiful town of Positano, before continuing on to Amalfi, which gives its name to the whole coast on which it lies. Amalfi was once a prosperous Marine Republic, powerful and prosperous and is now a thriving holiday resort. The unmistakable cluster of white tightly packed houses rising up the hillside is dominated by the beautiful Cathedral, which stands superbly on the top of a great flight of steps leading up from the main square. Housed in the magnificent Cathedral are the remains of the Patron Saint of Amalfi and also Scotland – Saint Andrew. Here you will have time at leisure to explore the largest and most popular town of this coast; boasting medieval architecture and colourful façades. Take the opportunity to enjoy this splendid jewel on the peninsula. From Amalfi we travel to Ravello, which nestles in the hillside and is considered by many to give the best views of the area. Here you can visit villa Rufolo (entrance extra), which gave the musician Richard Wagner the inspiration to create one of his most famous operas, Parsifal. Situated on a ledge over Amalfi, Ravello has been the inspiration for artists and gardeners for many years.
