Summer in the Italian Süd Tirol & the Dolomites
Experience the stunning scenery of the Italian Süd Tirol, which offers a unique mix of Italian and Austrian cultures in a spectacular Alpine setting. We begin with a trip to the Italian Dolomites, where we are treated to dramatic views of jagged mountain peaks and steep valleys. From our base in the Süd Tirol, we then offer three fantastic optional excursions, first to beautiful Lake Garda, then to Lake Misurina and charming Brunico, and finally to the floating city of Venice, where you can visit the famous sights from The Bridge of Sighs to St. Mark’s Square. Before you return home from your holiday, we visit Bolzano, the little pearl of the Tirol, where you can explore the cobbled streets and Gothic cathedral.

After breakfast join our included tour of the Italian Dolomites. We make our way south to Corvara where we travel along the Campolongo Pass to Arabba. On this wonderful scenic drive we meander our way through quaint towns before we make the steep climb up the Pordoi Pass. Once in Pordoi you have free time to explore. Maybe take a spot of lunch at the mountain restaurant or enjoy the fantastic views of the Dolomite region.
Today you have the opportunity to visit Italy’s largest lake, Lake Garda on our optional excursion. We start in the resort of Riva del Garda, which is dominated by the Rocca di Riva, a 12th century moated fortress, which hosts the town’s museum. Enjoy free time exploring this delightful town, perhaps picking up some souvenirs in the many shops, strolling along the lakeshore or relaxing in one of the tempting cafés. We then board a boat and sail to the lovely resort of Limone on the western shore; famous for its citrus groves and olive oil production. After free time we sail across the lake to the eastern shore and the town of Malcesine. Malcesine is a beautiful town with narrow cobbles streets clustering beneath the thirteenth century turreted Scaligero Castle. We re-join our coach and return to our hotel.

Why not join us today on our optional excursion to the beautiful Lake Misurina. The Misurina rink (La pista di Misurina) was the location of the speed skating events during the 1956 Winter Olympics. This was the last time that speed skating at the Olympics was held on natural ice. Spend time in this delightful resort with a relaxing walk along the lakeside or visit the shops and cafés which line its shores. We then continue to the picturesque town of Brunico, in the Puster Valley. The town is surrounded by the mountains of the Zillertaleralpen on one side and by the unique rock formations of the Dolomites on the other. You have free time to stroll down the Stadtgasse, one of the Sud Tirol’s most beautiful shopping streets, with its historical buildings, boutiques, cafés and cake shops.

Today you can join a wonderful optional excursion to the unique city of Venice, the largest city in the Veneto area. Venice is one of the most interesting cities in the world. It mixes Byzantine and Renaissance architecture throughout the 118 islands, and the magnificent buildings, surrounded by bridges and canals, are a sign of the city's former wealth. It has remained virtually the same for 600 years, which adds to its fascinating character and retains its romantic charm. Venice is the world’s only pedestrian city, which makes it easy to explore on foot. Be sure to see some of the famous sights such as the Doge’s Palace, the symbolic seat of Venetian power and the enclosed Bridge of Sighs. The bridge passes over the Rio di Palazzo and connects the New Prison to the interrogation rooms in the Doge’s Palace. The bridge's name comes from the suggestion that prisoners would sigh at their final view of Venice before being taken down to their cells. A local legend says that lovers will be granted eternal love and bliss if they kiss on a gondola at sunset under the Bridge of Sighs! A visit to St. Mark’s Square, the principal public square of Venice, is also a must. It is dominated at its eastern end by the magnificent St. Mark’s Basilica, a superb example of the Romanesque-Byzantine style. It was built in the 10th century to house the body of St. Mark the Evangelist. To make the most of your visit to this wonderful city we recommend you join our optional lagoon cruise around part of the Venetian Lagoon where we view St. Mark’s Square and several of the small islands including San Lazzaro degli Armeni, Sant’Erasmo and Vignole. We also pass Murano Island, famous for its glassmaking, before returning to St. Mark's Square.

Bolzano is the capital and also largest city in the region and is famously the home of Otzi, a well-preserved natural mummy of a man who lived about 3300BC. Otzi can be seen in the archaeology museum, which documents the entire history of the province from the Palaeolithic age to the Carolingian epoch (entrance to the museum is not included). Spend time exploring the arcades with the many traditional, chic and modern shops. See the colourful and lively Piazza delle Erbe, the heart of the city centre and home to the Neptune Fountain.
