We see the beautiful Piazza Venezia, the central hub of Rome in which many thoroughfares intersect. The imposing Monument to Vittorio Emanuele II, first king of Italy, dominates the piazza. The Viale di Fori Imperiali starts here, a main thoroughfare, which leads past the Roman Forum and Trajan’s Forum.

  • Included meals: Breakfast, Dinner

We leave Rome and head south to Naples. En route we pause in Montecassino famous for its hilltop sanctuary and the Battle of Montecassino in 1944. We continue to Naples then take the ferry across the Bay of Naples to the island of Ischia, our base for the next three nights.

Ischia

Ischia

Enjoy a full day included tour exploring this beautiful volcanic island, famed for its thermal springs, golden sandy beaches, forested mountains and excellent food and wines. We visit some of the pretty towns and villages that dot the island and particularly, the beautiful coastline. Spend time in the old town of Ischia, the main port of the island and see the extinct volcano of Monte Epomeo.

  • Included meals: Breakfast, Dinner

Why not join our included excursion to the beach-front Poseidon Gardens in Forio, which enjoy a superb setting on the bay of Citara. Poseidon is a thermal park that takes advantage of Ischia's natural hot springs where visitors are able to use 22 different swimming and bathing pools, each with their own different temperatures. With Ischia's volcanic activity bubbling away under the surface of the island, the thermal water used at Poseidon naturally flows into the complex at very high temperatures. In order to achieve the required temperature at each pool, the water is cooled and systematically diverted to the different areas with temperatures ranging from 15 to 40 degrees Celsius. Given its picturesque location in the bay of Citara, a day at Poseidon offers a stress-free and calming environment in which you can completely switch off and reap the benefits of the thermal water. The park covers a large area and the pools are spread around so that each is easily accessible from the other with plenty of sunbeds, parasols and benches available so that you can choose between soaking in the pools or relaxing on a bed with a book or a cool drink (or both!). Please note: the excursion includes entrance into the thermal park only. Any extras, such as treatments or beverages, are at own cost.

  • Included meals: Breakfast, Dinner
Pompeii

Pompeii

We leave Ischia and return by ferry to Naples. We then head to the historic town of Pompeii at the foot of Mount Vesuvius on our included excursion. In 79AD the eruption of Mount Vesuvius buried the town of Pompeii in about 6/7 metres of stones and ash. Painstaking excavations, which are still ongoing, began in the 18th century and have uncovered a remarkable hidden city. Accompany your expert guide around the town, walking along roads with indents from the passing of chariot wheels and discovering the remains of homes, shops and public baths (entrance to the ruins is included). We then continue to the awe-inspiring Mount Vesuvius. Discover the history of the volcano’s activity. The coach will take you within 1000 metres of the summit and from here you can walk to the very top and admire the splendid, panoramic views across the bay. (Please note that there is a local charge of approximately €10 to visit the crater). We continue to the Sorrento Peninsula for a three night stay.

  • Included meals: Breakfast, Dinner
Sorrento

Sorrento

A free day in Sorrento today, or you can join our superb optional excursion as we sail across the Bay of Naples to the Isle of Capri. Capri town is famous for its main square Piazza Umberto, which has a pretty white church and several open-air cafes where you can sit and watch the world drift by. Leading off the square are medieval looking alleyways and arcades full of shops selling handicrafts of the island, clothing, shoes, ceramics and jewellery made from coral and gold. Admire the colourful gardens of Augustus (entrance extra), which overlook the famed Faraglioni Rocks and Marina Piccola where Gracie Fields once lived. There is so much to see and do on this tiny island paradise you will be sorry to leave.

  • Included meals: Breakfast, Dinner
Sorrento

Sorrento

Today’s optional excursion takes us along one of the most spectacular roads in Europe, the ‘Amalfi Drive’. The winding cliff top road offers breath-taking panoramic views at every bend. We pause above the beautiful town of Positano, before continuing on to Amalfi, which gives its name to the whole coast on which it lies. Amalfi was once a prosperous Marine Republic, powerful and prosperous and is now a thriving holiday resort. The unmistakable cluster of white tightly packed houses rising up the hillside is dominated by the beautiful Cathedral, which stands superbly on the top of a great flight of steps leading up from the main square. Housed in the magnificent Cathedral are the remains of the Patron Saint of Amalfi and also Scotland – Saint Andrew. Here you will have time at leisure to explore the largest and most popular town of this coast; boasting medieval architecture and colourful façades. Take the opportunity to enjoy this splendid jewel on the peninsula. From Amalfi we travel to Ravello, which nestles in the hillside and is considered by many to give the best views of the area. Here you can visit villa Rufolo (at extra cost – approximately € 7 per person), which gave the musician Richard Wagner the inspiration to create one of his most famous operas, Parsifal. Situated on a ledge over Amalfi, Ravello has been the inspiration for artists and gardeners for many years.

  • Included meals: Breakfast, Dinner
Castel Gandolfo

Castel Gandolfo

We leave Sorrento and head to the small town of Castel Gandolfo on the shores of Lake Albano and home to the Pope’s summer residence. Most of the town is part of the independent papal state of the Vatican City, and when in residence the Pope addresses the crowd from the balcony of the palace. (Please note: entrance into the Pope’s summer residence is prohibited). We continue to the attractive, historic hill-town of Frascati. It is a small, relaxed town with a slower pace of life, cleaner air and a far more casual feel than the nearby capital. Frascati is famous for its villas, in particular Villa Aldobrandini, which dominates the town. Frascati is also famous for its production of white wine. After free time we continue to our overnight hotel in the Rome area.
