The capital of Spain is a truly cosmopolitan city, with a wealth of cultural attractions. See the best of the city on our optional sightseeing tour. The splendid Plaza Mayor provides the perfect starting point to explore Old Madrid, lined with beautifully muralled buildings. See the huge Palacio Real (Royal Palace), a landmark of the city, explore the Paseo del Prado of Bourbon Madrid and enjoy a stroll around the magnificent Retiro Park.

    • Included meals: Breakfast, Dinner

Enjoy an optional excursion into rural Castile, to the medieval walled town of Segovia, a UNESCO World Heritage Site which lays claim to being the most spectacularly sited city in Spain. In addition to its famous Roman aqueduct and beautiful Old Town, the numerous Romanesque churches, cathedral and fortress create a magnificent landscape that presides over this part of Castile.

    • Included meals: Breakfast, Dinner

We include an excursion to Toledo, known as the ‘city of the three cultures’ because Christians, Arabs and Jews lived there for centuries. Behind its walls, Toledo preserves its artistic and cultural legacy in the form of churches, palaces, fortresses, mosques and synagogues, possibly the greatest wealth of monuments in Spain.

    • Included meals: Breakfast, Dinner

We travel to El Escorial Monastery, a Baroque-style complex, and also admire the poignant sculptures of the Valley of the Fallen monument, erected in memory of the half a million who died in the Spanish Civil War. We return to Madrid later, for free time.

    • Included meals: Breakfast, Dinner

We leave Madrid and travel first to Avila which rises from the ground, underneath the dramatic backdrop of the Gredos Sierra. Behind the walls of this capital of Castile-León lie myriad beauties of Romanesque and Gothic architecture, and Renaissance churches and palaces, all examples of a bygone splendour of the city. Travel on to Salamanca, where we stay for two nights.

    • Included meals: Breakfast, Dinner

Spend the day exploring the beautiful city of Salamanca, with its splendid Roman, Arabic and Christian architectural treasures. Wander the elegant arcades of the Plaza Mayor and see Puente Romano, which spans the River Tormes.
