Regional departure by coach or Door-to-Door service, then to Portsmouth or Plymouth for the overnight crossing to Santander.
Please note: When you board the ferry at Portsmouth or Plymouth, you will require a small overnight bag containing any essential items such as medication. Please note that this small bag (no larger than a small rucksack) is counted as part of your overall luggage allowance.
Evening arrival in Santander, then continue to our overnight hotel in northern Spain.

Head to Salamanca for an overnight stay. Spend the afternoon exploring this beautiful World Heritage City, with its splendid Roman, Arabic and Christian architectural treasures. Wander the Old Town, and see the elegant arcades of the Plaza Mayor, reputed to be one of Spain's most beautiful squares. The square's 18th century buildings were constructed in the Baroque style by architect Alberto Churriguera, and many of the town's important buildings such as the cathedral, university, and 'Shells House', can be found nearby. The 'Casa de la Conchas' or 'Shells House' has carved stone scallop shells covering the exterior walls, and was previously the home of Rodrigo Maldonado, a knight of the order of Saint James. The scallop shells are one of the symbols of the Order of St. James, and the pilgrim route 'Camino de Santiago' or 'Way of St. James'.

Spend the morning in Salamanca. After lunch, we head to the medieval walled town of Avila, a World Heritage Site, with a mixture of Romanesque and Gothic architecture, and Renaissance churches and palaces surrounded by the old city walls. The walls were constructed between the 11th and 14th centuries to defend the city and a display of power and wealth, and measure 2.5 kilometres in length, stand 14 metres high, and are a popular visitor attraction. We continue to Torrejon, near Madrid where we stay for four nights.

The capital of Spain, Madrid is a truly cosmopolitan city with a wealth of cultural attractions. The splendid Plaza Mayor provides the perfect starting point to explore Old Madrid, lined with beautifully muralled buildings. See the huge Palacio Real (Royal Palace), a landmark of the city, explore the Paseo del Prado of Bourbon Madrid and enjoy a stroll around the magnificent El Retiro Park. The park is a popular retreat for many, with its lake, classical gardens, glass palaces, monuments, fountains and over 15,000 trees. Our optional sightseeing tour will show you the best of the city.

Free day in Madrid or join our optional excursion to Toledo, often regarded as the Spanish city with the greatest wealth of monuments and known as the ‘city of the three cultures’, because Christians, Arabs and Jews lived there for centuries. Behind its walls, Toledo preserves its artistic and cultural legacy in the form of churches, palaces, fortresses, mosques and synagogues. Toledo also has a large number of museums, including the 'Museum of El Greco' which showcases the works of El Greco and also paintings by artists such as Luis Tristan, Murillo and Valdés Leal. The town also contains many hidden treasures such as the Roman remains under Alfonso X street, originally discovered in 1628 during construction work, and re-discovered in 1918.

Join our included excursion to Segovia spectacularly situated on a high rocky spur. Its old quarter and Roman aqueduct are World Heritage Sites. Numerous Romanesque churches, the cathedral and fortress create a magnificent city that presides over this part of Castile.

We head north to Burgos, situated on the Pilgrim’s Road. The cathedral and old quarter are masterpieces of Spanish Gothic architecture. The Santa Maria Arch is an impressive entrance to the city, and is reminiscent of a castle with two large towers, and a triumphal arch dedicated to the memory of Carlos V. The statue of El Cid can be seen on the north side of the San Pablo bridge, and his tomb is located in the centre of Burgos cathedral. We stay overnight in the Burgos area.

We leave Burgos and head to the stunning city of San Sebastián (also known as Donostia) set on a sweeping, shell-shaped bay with its charming old quarter and Belle Epoque style. The three sandy beaches are frequented by tourists, locals, and sports enthusiasts alike. The local tapas bars are a true delight, and the local Pintxos dishes (mini dishes often elaborately assembled) are also very popular snacks. Continue into France and to the Ciboure or Biarritz area for one night.
