Today we visit the iconic Pont du Gard, a vast bridge and aqueduct built in Roman times to carry water to the city of Nïmes, and today a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Soak up the atmosphere of this ancient monument as you walk across the lower spans, or discover the local history and heritage by visiting the on-site museum. We continue to Nïmes, a pretty town, known for its Roman monuments – in the town centre see the ‘Maison Carrée’ a restored temple, or the atmospheric Roman arena still used as an events venue.

We continue to Isle sur la Sorgue, a small town situated on the River Sorgue, known for its abundance of antique shops, and for many ancient waterwheels – fifteen can still be seen, and some, although no longer working, are still turning.

During the day, we will visit the Pont de Gau Ornithological Park, whose aim is to protect the Camargue and its nature. Here you can see bird species resident in the Camargue, such as Flamingos, Heron, or birds of prey, plus other nomadic species travelling around the wetlands of Europe.

On our return, we call at a wine co-operative, where you will be able to sample some of the region’s wines, and perhaps purchase your favourites to bring home.

We leave Avignon behind this morning as we begin our journey northwards. During the day we stop in the beautiful town of Vienne. Built around the Rhône River, you will have time at leisure to explore the narrow streets and discover the ancient monuments, many of which are still very well preserved today. We continue to northern France for an overnight stay.

You will stay for six nights at the 3-star Hotel Bristol, superbly located within the old city walls of the beautiful historic town of Avignon and only a 10-minute walk to the magnificent fortified UNESCO World Heritage Site, Palais des Papes (Papal Palace). A great week with Nana and Leah, once again. We had some fabulous weather once south of Dijon on the way south and before the thick fog on the return trip to Dunkirk and across the Channel. We were caught up with the problems at Dover but our drivers were excellent and we were only 4 hours late with the ferry whereas others had to wait perhaps up to 14 hours. The hotel in Reims were truly excellent, the one in Avignon was very good, clean and comfortable. On the return journey the accommodation in Reims (not the same as the outward journey) was clean etc although the breakfast was not up to the standard of the other two. Perhaps the very early start was a problem!!! The tours were very good - loved Gourd and the Camargue.

Beautiful location visiting all the most important historical sights and environmental experiences from the hilltop villages to the wildlife on the Camargue. Pont du Gard, Aix en Provence, Nimes and Avignon. Wine tasting, Lavender farm and ornithological park added an extra dimension to this wonderful nine day break where we could visit all the places at our own pace with a group led by a knowledgeable, friendly and professional crew in a luxurious coach.

Superb introduction to the beauty and tranquility of this much written about area. Centrally placed, “Art Deco” style hotel provided comfortable and stylish accommodation and a substantial and varied breakfast, whilst local restaurants for evening meals were plentiful and reasonably priced. Itinerary was varied and well planned and suitable for all ages. Coach crew, Leah and Nana, were a delight whilst the Luxuria coach itself was extremely comfortable and well appointed. Yet another superior holiday we would happily repeat.
