Local departure by coach, then to the outskirts of Caen for a four-night stay.
Today’s included Normandy excursion first takes us to Deauville and Trouville, both favourite seaside resorts for the Parisians, and for artists and writers. Deauville is known world-wide for its glamour – its attractions include a wide sandy beach, upmarket shopping, an elegant casino, many opulent hotels, and a yachting marina. Trouville is renowned for its long beach and historic seafront boardwalk which dates from 1867, its elegant villas and thriving fishing port. Visitors to Trouville can see the fine art collection at the Musée Villa Montebello, and dotted around town, murals by Raymond Savignac, the humorous Parisian poster designer, who settled here. We then continue to the quaint port town of Honfleur, with its many historic houses set around the quays of the Vieux Port, and the beautiful Saint Catherine’s Church, constructed completely out of local wood by local shipbuilders. Honfleur’s beauty has been represented many times by artists, including Impressionist painters such as Claude Monet.

Free day or join our optional excursion to the fortified town of St. Malo, with its huge ramparts and city walls which you can walk around. Explore the old centre and the maze of narrow cobbled streets, and perhaps try one of the famous crêpes. We also visit the pretty medieval town of Dinan, said to be one of the prettiest small towns in Brittany. See the picturesque half-timbered houses set around Place des Merciers, or for spectacular views of the surrounding area, you can climb the 40-metre Tour de l’ Horloge clock tower. To see the pretty old port on the river Rance, you can take a stroll down the picture-postcard (though steeply cobbled) Rue du Petit Fort.

Enjoy our included excursion to Rouen, described by 19th century poet and novelist Victor Hugo as the city of ‘a hundred spires’. See the Notre Dame Cathedral with its splendid Butter Tower, immortalised in paintings by Claude Monet. Take a stroll to admire the famous Gros Horloge, a huge astronomical clock dating back to the 16th century, and in the centre of the Old Market Square stands the church of St. Joan of Arc, whose design represents the pyre on which Joan perished in 1431. The former Archbishop’s Palace houses the ‘Historial Jeanne d’Arc’ a modern museum dedicated to the life of Joan of Arc.

Very long drives to get to the hotel and back so really only 3 days in France. The 3 days were fine.

This tour was more of a taster of the regions of Normandy and Brittany as there were no full days in the towns visited and the hotel was based on the outskirts of Caen. Although it's not billed as such, it's a good tour if you particularly want to visit the Caen Memorial Museum which was only 5 minutes away from the hotel, and don't mind missing one of the included tours or the optional tour. I didn't do this as I wanted to visit the towns but would possibly do this tour again to visit the Museum rather than do one of the dedicated WW2/battlefields tours

If Leger used Caen instead of Calais for the ferry over the Channel, it would have been better, as the only negative was the distance from home to accommodation. The drivers, Rory and Dave, were both professional and entertaining. The hotel was basic but comfortable and the food served was good. We really enjoyed the trips out to the Normandy coastal towns and Rouen. The journeys out and back were very tiring, but good organisation at Stop 24 in Kent.
