Versailles & Monet’s Garden
We follow in the footsteps of the French kings this morning and travel to the splendid Château and Gardens of Versailles. Located on the western outskirts of Paris and originally created for Louis XIV, admire the magnificent gardens or château from this once opulent era. (Chateau entrance is at extra cost. Chateau entrance is subject to local queueing times). Enjoy a relaxing stroll through the gardens, or along Versailles own Grand Canal, or why not discover the many fountains and pools, some of which are examples of fine sculpture. Please note that you will have time to visit either the gardens, or the Chateau at Versailles. From Versailles we continue to the village of Giverny in Normandy to visit the home of Claude Monet. The artist lived here from 1883 until his death in 1926, and today his house and in particular the gardens, made famous by his painting of the water lilies, have been restored to Monet’s original designs. His gardens, stretching from his house down to the river, provided the inspiration for many of his famous paintings, such as his series of ‘Nympheas’ or Water Lilies and his ‘Pont Japonais’ or Japanese Bridge, which has also been rebuilt for visitors to enjoy. Monet’s garden is widely regarded as being his greatest masterpiece, and was meticulously planned, so that each month would bring a host of new blooms and an explosion of colours. The vibrancy of the colours and careful contrasts means that the gardens continue to delight visitors at any time of the year.
Paris & Paris Latin Quarter
Included, full-day visit to Paris. To make sure you see the major sights, join our optional, guided sightseeing coach tour which takes in sights such as the famous Eiffel Tower, Arc de Triomphe, Champs Élysées, and Place de la Concorde. Later, you can enjoy a different view of the city on our optional hour-long River Seine Cruise, as you sail past elegant buildings and under the bridges for which Paris is justly proud. This evening, be sure to take advantage of our optional visit into the Latin Quarter (a bustling area of restaurants, cafes and souvenir shops to the south of the Ile de la Cité and Notre Dame) where you can enjoy the atmosphere and sample the local bars and restaurants.
Chambord & Blois
We head to the Loire Valley, with a visit to Château Chambord and the pretty town of Blois en route. Chambord is a magnificent feat of architecture, a marvel of the French Renaissance, and is the largest Château in the Loire Valley. Blois is the capital of Loir-et-Cher and enjoys a picturesque setting spanning the Loire. We stay in Saumur for two nights.
Included full day exploring the lovely Loire Valley and its châteaux. We begin at the magnificent Château Chenonceau, which spans the River Cher, ending the day in Amboise with its château set high on a hill overlooking the river.
Château De Fontainebleau
We leave the Loire and head north to Château de Fontainebleau. Delightfully situated in the heart of a beautiful forest and surrounded by an impressive garden, this was once a hunting residence of the former French monarchy. Continue to our hotel in northern France.
