Your Itinerary

    Depart from your chosen airport for your flight to Ljubljana. We recommend you check in for your flight 2 hours 30 minutes before the scheduled time of departure. Upon arrival in Ljubljana you will be transferred to your hotel where you will stay for the next four nights.

    Today we have an included morning city tour of Ljubljana with a local guide. Ljubljana is the capital of Slovenia and is the heart of the area. The city has a long history with a legacy of Roman Emona through to the Renaissance and the Art Nouveau period. The city is an exceptionally young city for an historical destination as the area is home to many students so from this it is also known as ‘the city of wine and vine’. The city boasts a strong culture, characterised by its architecture from the baroque period. Narrow cobbled street lie squeezed between the castle slopes and the River Ljubljanica.

    After you have found your way in the city you have free time for exploring Ljublijana Christmas Market. The Ljubljana Christmas Markets is well known for its vibrancy and cheerful atmosphere with green festive decorated stalls all selling fine products for that idea Christmas gift. The locals refer to the markets as the Christmas Fair or ‘the merry December in the Old town’ and they offer countless food and drink stalls offering mulled wine, tea, liqueurs and various grilled dishes for some food on the go or to sit and enjoy while watching passing people view the markets. The Christmas Fair offers lots of different accessories including a good choice of headwear, gloves and scarfs to keep you warm and local Slovenian designers have some ‘original’ designs to enjoy or you can sample and purchase local honey’s schnapps and confections.

    Zagreb

    Today we include a full day excursion into Croatia and Zagreb. Upon arrival, we enjoy an included city tour with a local guide. Zagreb is the capital of Croatia, on the historic and political threshold between East and West which both have a continental and Mediterranean spirit throughout. Zabreg as we know it today is formed from a rich history dating back to the middle ages when they formed the settlements on the two hills. Gradec today known as the Upper town and Kaptol. The beautiful cathedral is the dominating attraction in this stunning neo-gothic style.

    You will then have time to visit the Christmas markets. During the advert season Zegreb offers a variety of events that will satisfy every Christmas need. Zegreb Christmas Markets offer excellent food and drink, unique events, art and of course stalls. The markets also have an ice park, Zrinjevac park is transformed into a winter wonderland where you can enjoy the Christmas ornaments and handmade souvenirs or even took into some ‘krpice sa Zeljem’ which is a local pasta and cabbage dish. You can also see the live nativity scene staged on Kaptol. The markets and events are all over the city so have look around.

    Bled Island in Winter

    Bled Island in Winter

    We head to Bled with its small but charming Christmas market on our included excursion. Enjoy a tour with local guide around this lovely town which has so much to offer. Why not visit some of town’s churches and monuments such as famous ‘church on the island’ which according to a legend the temple of the ancient Slavic goddess Ziva once stood in the place of the present Baroque church but the temple was destroyed during battles between the Pagans and Christians and replaced by the church. If you enjoy the arts you can visit the Gallery 14 which offers contemporary works of art or even Bled Castle Stolp gallery not forgetting Bled Castle itself which has beautiful views on the lake and is the former residence of the Bishops of Brixen and built in 1004. While in Bled you can enjoy the local cuisine including the famous Bled Cream cake which has a golden crispy crust made from butter dough and a delicious vanilla cream, topped with whipped cream and another crispy layer of butter dough and a sprinkling of icing sugar or you can even take a ride in a traditional coach called a coachman Fijaker which is a horse drawn carriage which is a great way to enjoy the sights.

    Bled Christmas Markets will included stands offering festive gifts and typical food and drinks from the Gorenjska region. They have the ‘Bled ice rink with a view’ which is located on the terrace of the hotel Park Coffee shop and the Christmas Crib which is the largest permanent Nativity Scene in Slovenia. The crib is set on Lake Bled at the public lido and is illuminated by lights and music to create this unique attraction. We then return to Ljubljana later for your evening meal and relax before your return home tomorrow.
