Today we have an included morning city tour of Ljubljana with a local guide. Ljubljana is the capital of Slovenia and is the heart of the area. The city has a long history, from its origins as a Roman settlement called Emona, through to the Renaissance and the Art Nouveau period. The city is an exceptionally young city for an historical destination as the area is home to many students so from this it is also known as ‘the city of wine and vine’. The city boasts a strong culture, characterised by its architecture from the baroque period. Narrow cobbled street lie squeezed between the castle slopes and the River Ljubljanica.

Following the guided tour, enjoy free time for exploring Ljubljana Christmas Market. The Ljubljana Christmas Market is well known for its vibrancy and cheerful atmosphere with green festive decorated stalls all selling fine products for that ideal Christmas gift. The locals refer to the markets as the Christmas Fair or ‘the merry December in the Old town’ and you can find countless food and drink stalls offering mulled wine, tea, liqueurs and various grilled dishes. The Christmas Fair offers lots of different accessories including a good choice of headwear, gloves and scarves to keep you warm, or you can sample and purchase local honey, schnapps and confectionery.

City Tour of Ljubljana with Local Guide Ljubljana Christmas Markets

Today we include a full day excursion to Zagreb. Upon arrival, we enjoy an included city tour with a local guide. Zagreb is the capital of Croatia, and has a rich history dating back to the middle ages where two settlements formed on the two hills, Gradec today known as the Upper town and Kaptol, with its beautiful cathedral.

The rest of the day is free to enjoy the Christmas market with stalls at Johann Franck square, European square, Zrinjevac Park, and Strossmayer Square, offering lots of traditional gift ideas, ornaments and souvenirs. You can also see the ice park, situated at King Tomislav Square, with outdoor skating to musical accompaniment and culinary delights to be sampled.

Zagreb Christmas Markets Zagreb including City Tour with Local Guide

This afternoon we head to Bled, with its small but charming Christmas market on our included excursion. Enjoy a tour with local guide around this lovely town which has so much to offer. Why not visit some of town’s churches and monuments such as the famous ‘church on the island’ and Bled Castle, boasting beautiful views of the lake.

Maybe take a horse drawn carriage ride in a traditional coach called a Fijaker which is a pleasant way to enjoy the sights, or enjoy ice skating on the Bled Ice Rink.

Bled has a delightful Christmas market with lovely festive gifts and tasty local cuisine including the famous Bled Cream cake. Bled also has the largest permanent Nativity Scene in Slovenia. The crib is set on Lake Bled at the public lido and contains life-size painted figures.

We return to Ljubljana later, in time for your evening meal.
