About the Tour

One of the oldest in Europe, starting off at Strasbourg Christmas Market, this festive holiday is a real treat. Enjoy time in the ’Capital of Christmas’ and its Alsatian spirit, there’s a fantastic French atmosphere with a hint of the famous German influence of its close neighbour. And, as you step across the border, you’ll really get to enjoy some authentic German Christmas markets. Venturing into the Black Forest, famous of course, for its gâteau, before the festivities really step in. Relish the famous Freiburg Christmas Market before heading back over the border for a feast of festivities in France as we also take in the yuletide offerings of Colmar and Metz.

This morning, we leave our hotel after breakfast and commence our journey to Germany. En route we pause at the beautiful city of Strasbourg.

Strasbourg is a vibrant multicultural city and capital of the Alsace region. Strasbourg is also the official seat of the European Parliament and its historic city centre is a UNESCO World Heritage site. During the festive season, the Christkindelsmarik (market of the Child Jesus), comes alive. There are around 300 stalls throughout the city, with the main markets taking place on Place Broglie and Cathedral Square. There will be time here for you to stroll through the Marché de Noël, absorbing the sights and smells of seasonal treats.

Later this afternoon we continue to the Black Forest and our hotel for the next three-nights. (Suitable refreshment stops will be made en-route).

    • Included meals: Breakfast, Dinner
    Freiburg

    Freiburg

The Black Forest is one of the most visited and best-known holiday regions of Germany. People are attracted by the outstanding natural beauty of its varied landscapes; from deep forests, rolling hills, lush meadows and pretty villages with decorated wooden houses. On our included excursion we have a short visit to the lakeside resorts of Titisee and Schluchsee.

We begin in the town of Schluchsee, home to the highest reservoir in Germany and due to its altitude, its water is often cool even in summer. After a short stop we continue to Titisee, the largest natural lake in the Black Forest, stretching for over 1 mile. Its crystal clear waters attract thousands of visitors every year.

Later, we continue to the university city of Freiburg im Breisgau, one of the most attractive of South Germany and generally regarded as being the “unofficial capital” of the Black Forest. The charming old town is dominated by its Gothic Munster the towering spire of which is the landmark of the city. The town centre is noted for its pretty squares and romantic lanes and alongside some of the cobbled streets run a series of narrow streams called the Bachle.

The Freiburg Christmas Market is held in the very heart of its beautiful historical quarter. Shop for traditional arts and crafts from the Black Forest region, including straw shoes and colourful wooden toys.

    • Included meals: Breakfast, Dinner
    Colmar

    Colmar

A day at leisure today or why not join our optional excursion to the pretty French town of Colmar, which is all the more beguiling at this time of year. Situated along the Alsatian Wine Route, the town considers itself to be the ‘capital of Alsatian wine’.

Colmar town centre is essentially pedestrianised and comprises of numerous monuments, churches, museums and alleys, full of imposing buildings dating from the Middle Ages to the 19th century. At this time of year the Christmas magic takes over as the Old Town is illuminated and decorated. Explore the Christmas markets in the Old Town where a procession of decorations lead you to stalls selling a variety of festive goods.

    • Included meals: Breakfast, Dinner
    Metz

    Metz

We say goodbye to the Black Forest and head into France to our overnight hotel. We pause in the town of Metz where you will have time to explore the Christmas Markets.

In Metz the Christmas Market is held in the heart of the historic quarter. During December the historic city centre is transformed into a village with over 80 pine wood chalets and decorations and the air is filled with Christmas music and the smell of Mulled Wine.

This afternoon we continue to our hotel in northern France.
