    Berlin

This morning a local coach and local guide will meet you in the hotel reception and then take you on an included orientation tour of the city by coach and then on foot. Your guide will introduce you to the famous sights of the city and point out the all-important Christmas Markets. Few cities have seen as many changes over recent years as Berlin and today you can enjoy a full day exploring the city and all it has to offer. Having re-gained its pre-war status as the capital of Germany, Berlin now thrives on its exciting new architecture, youthful vibrancy and rich cultural diversity. The city has a cosmopolitan buzz that makes it one of Europe’s top city destinations. Berlin is a city with something for everyone, from fantastic gastronomic experiences, art, shopping, culture, history and much more.

During the “cold war” period the city was divided between east and west but is once again the flourishing capital of the unified Germany. The remainder of the day is at leisure, and with such a chequered past there is plenty for you to see and explore. Anyone wanting to experience the charm of ‘Winter Magic’ is in the right place in Berlin with around sixty Christmas markets dotted all over the city. After the orientation tour you will have the remainder of the day to explore this fantastic city at your own pace before making your own way back to the hotel.

A further day at leisure to explore Berlin. One of Berlin’s most famous festive markets takes place at the Charlottenburg Castle and park. Here vendors from all over Germany offer carefully selected arts and crafts, ancient handicrafts and lovely food. The Gendarmenmarkt Christmas market takes place on one of the most beautiful squares in the city and here you will find wood carvers and stonemasons presenting their work. The Christmas market on Potsdamer Platz is also well worth a visit with many handicrafts and local delicacies on offer, as well as a large open-air ice rink! A visit to the market at the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church is a must with approximately 170 stalls to explore.

A cup of hot cocoa or a traditional mulled wine will help keep you warm whilst you shop for those all-important gifts. Berlin’s largest Christmas market, with approximately 250 stands, takes place in the Spandau Old Town. For a more Scandinavian twist visit the Christmas market at the Kulturbrauerei (Cultrual Brewery) situated in the Prezlauer Berg district of Berlin. The Christmas Market here is named after Lucia, the Nordic goddess of light, and this is a popular market with anyone looking for a romantic atmosphere. For a more nostalgic Christmas market head between the Staatsoper and Opernapalais where you will find craftspeople, confectioners, almond and chestnut roasters and candle and lantern makers all offering their products. (Please note that entrance costs to any places of interest are not included).

Transfer to Berlin airport for your return flight home.
