Lumina: A Day in the Life

So come and spend a day with us. This is the sixth day of Umbria Uncovered & Tuscan Delights, a twelve-day Lumina tour that winds through the hilltop towns, vineyards and ancient cities of central Italy. From the first coffee to the last glass of the evening – a morning in a medieval abbey, a drive through the hills, an afternoon in Assisi, and a toast as the sun goes down. One day, lived exactly as you would live it, to give you a real feel for what a Lumina tour has in store.
Morning at the Abbazia Collemedio
You wake in a converted monastery. The Hotel Abbazia Collemedio, your home for seven nights, is an abbey turned hotel, and something of that calm has settled into the stone – the stillness that holds over the valley at first light. Its place here is earned, not assumed: like every mainstay hotel on a Lumina tour, the Abbazia is chosen from those our own guests score most highly, trip after trip. Breakfast first, with time for a stroll around the historic grounds before the day begins. You'll return to all of it tonight – the spa, the wide outdoor pool, dinner in the restaurant – but this morning, Assisi is calling.
On the Road
A little after breakfast, you step aboard Lumina, waiting just beyond the abbey walls, and take your assigned seat, kept yours for the whole journey. Stowing your things is just as simple – overhead storage for hand luggage and smaller items, and a dedicated space to hang coats and jackets. There are only twenty-seven guest seats on board, each one forward-facing with room to properly stretch out – more than most leading short-haul airlines allow.
The doors close softly, and we pull away through olive groves and vineyards, the road climbing north towards Mount Subasio. Your two Hosts share the driving between them, and once we're under way, one comes down the aisle with a freshly made complimentary coffee, remembering you take it white.
Above your seat, a panoramic glass roof draws the morning in, tinted against the Italian sun, climate control keeping the cabin cool and even beneath it. Travelling with you is your Curator – your guide for the day. For most of the drive they let the landscape speak; now and then a quiet word, the story behind a village on the ridge or a detail you'd otherwise miss, before they sit back and leave you to watch a film on your at-seat entertainment screen or take in the passing views.
Assisi
By mid-morning, the town appears, rising in soft pink stone from the slopes of Subasio, much as it has since St Francis walked its streets eight hundred years ago. Lumina sets you down, and this is where your Curator steps in – pointing out a few of the places of interest before stepping back, on hand for any questions as the day unfolds. The hours ahead are yours: to explore the Basilica di San Francesco and its celebrated Giotto frescoes, take in the Piazza del Comune, find a café in a sunlit corner, or simply lose time in the side streets. Should you wish to delve a little deeper, an optional guided sightseeing tour is available to join.
An Afternoon Toast
Later, we leave the town for a family wine producer in the surrounding hills. A tasting of the region's best – poured where it's made – is a fitting toast to the day, and a reminder that in Umbria the table is never far from the vine. When the last sip is finished, Lumina carries you home through the gold of late afternoon, the glass roof catching the light as the sun slips behind the ridge – a view worth sharing, and with complimentary Starlink Wi-Fi throughout, easily done.
Back at the Abbazia Collemedio
You arrive with the evening still ahead of you – time for the spa, or a final drink as the light fades, before dinner in the old abbey and the easy conversation of a day well spent. And as you settle in beneath those ancient arches, tomorrow is already taking shape.
