Kaiser’s Battle – Operation Michael

On the centenary of Kaiser's Battle, also knows as Kaiserschlact and Operation Michael, we visit the ground and remember the harrowing events from 1918. We visit the sites where German troops attacked near Cambrai to south of St. Quentin, such as Manchester Hill. We also visit battlefield sites on Somme taking a look at the battles that took place between the Australian and German troops there. For the centenary a ceremony will either be conducted by your guide or we will join the major events in the local area.

Itinerary

Regional departure by coach, then to our hotel in northern France or Belgium, where we stay for four nights.

Today we start on the March 1918 battlefields near St. Quentin seeing some of the key locations connected with the fighting here including Grand-Seraucourt British Cemetery, Manchester Hill, Savy, Holnon Wood, Vadencourt British Cemetery and Ham.

On 21st March we will attend any major ceremonies in the area or have our own short ceremony on the battlefield. On this day we will also visit both the Arras and Pozières Memorials which commemorate those who died in March 1918 as well as the Historial Museum at Peronne.

We return to the Somme battlefields and look at the continued advance of the German troops in March-April 1918 visiting Fins, Epehy, Villers-Guislan and Gauche Wood. After lunch we look at the conclusion of the battle around Villers-Bretonneux in April 1918, seeing where Australia and British troops brought the German advance to an end.
