Battlefield Netherlands

In the autumn of 1944 the Allied forces found themselves advancing on a wide front across the Netherlands. The famous Operation Market Garden, leading to Arnhem, took place but there were many forgotten battles along the eastern corridor of Holland. This tour takes us off the beaten track following some of the toughest battles of 75 years ago.

Itinerary

Local departure by coach, then to our hotel in Holland, where we stay for three nights.

We start at Overloon looking at the fighting here in October 1944 when the 1st Suffolk made their attack.

From here we see the Overloon Windmill site where both Americans and British troops fought in 1944, and after seeing the graves in Overloon War Cemetery we visit original WW2 trenches and foxholes in the woods.

After lunch and time to explore the superb Overloon War Museum, with many WW2 tanks and artefacts, we follow the story of George Eardley VC and look at Monty’s Ironsides at Venray, seeing the battlefield and Venray War Cemetery.

We end at the huge German War Cemetery at Ysselsteyn

German War Cemetery, Ysselstyn Overloon War Cemetery Overloon War Museum

Today we focus on the fighting in the ground between eastern Holland and Germany, along the River Roer.

We start at Brunssum War Cemetery where some of the dead from the fighting in the Roer Salient are buried and then examine Operation Clipper, the fighting for Geilenkirchen.

At Susteren we follow the assault crossing by British troops and see an 88mm anti-tank gun, before visiting Sittard War Cemetery where the youngest recipient of the Victoria Cross in WW2 is buried.

After lunch we look at the story of Eric Harden, a Commando medic who was awarded the Victoria Cross in this area. We then see an original Buffalo tracked vehicle on the River Maas before ending at the incredible Eyewitness Museum at Beek which is one of the best Second World War private collections in the Netherlands.

You will stay for three nights at the 3-star Hotel Walram in the centre of Valkenburg. The hotel has a lift, restaurant and bar. The Walram’s indoor swimming pool and sauna are also available to use.
