This morning, after breakfast, we travel to the charming city of Lucerne on our included excursion. Nestling amongst the foothills of the Alps, Lucerne is home to the Hofkirche Cathedral, Rittersche Palace and one of the finest baroque churches in Switzerland, the Jesuit church. Known as the ‘city of lights’, Lucerne has plenty to offer its visitor, from strolling around an art gallery, exploring the shops, or simply relaxing in one of the cafés. Be sure to visit the ‘Zytturm’, which boasts the oldest public clock in Lucerne. Dating from 1535 the clock always strikes the hour one minute ahead of all the other clocks in the city. During the day there will the chance to join an optional cruise on the lake. Then, this afternoon, why not join our optional excursion on the Pilatusbahn, the world’s steepest cog railway, to the summit of Mount Pilatus? The Pilatusbahn has been in operation since 1889 and climbs Mount Pilatus at a 48% gradient, rising 6,791 feet above sea level. The original passenger steam cars had an average speed of 2-3mph and took more than 1 hour to reach the summit. Today the electric cars run at 6mph and take just 30 minutes to reach the top. We descend the mountain by cable car, which offers some spectacular views of the area.

The tour drivers Marcus and Richard were excellent and a credit to Leger. The hotels involved. Ibis Styles in France was good. Hotel Engel from my point of view was good, food was ok and seconds were always offered if you wanted more. Breakfast was continental although boil your own eggs were also available. The Hotel Inn Charles de Gaulle was ok apart from the Breakfast dining manager losing it when we appeared early for Breakfast depite the area been empty. The tour itself was good. Day 1+2 Travelling - as expected. Day 3 Meringen and Reichenbach Falls - Great day but mainly down to the drivers doing an optional extra excursion to the Aareschlucht Gorge. Day 4 Brienz and Interlaken - poor day , Brienz looks to have a great mountain railway, the Brienz Rothhorn Bahn railway that you can only watch leave. Interlaken alright if you want an expensive watch. The drivers again arranged an optional Land train tour but again this was thinking by the crew rather than Leger. Day 5 - Swiss Glacier Express - ok day. This was ok but seemed to be just a train ride from Chur to Andermatt with little time at Chur and nothing much to see at Andermatt. Perhaps more time at Chur or a different line altogether in Summer. I’ve done winter trip on the same line with Leger and there was a lot more to see with the Skiers about. Day 6 Jungfrau Regional Railway. - Loved this day, scenery was amazing combined with the train ride it was fantastic. Day 7 Lucerne with optional trips of Lake Cruise and Pilatus cog railway and Cable Car. another excellent day if you opt for the extra trips. The cog railway and Cable Car rides was something else and well worth the money. Day 8-9 Unfortunately this is where the trip went wrong. The journey back to Stop 24 with Marcus and Richard we couldn't fault, however the feeder service (coach 102) was atrocious, the driver appeared to be an Agency driver planned to take the vehicle from Folkestone to Preston however there was only one break at Corely services of 45 minutes there was no communication from the driver that this would take place and also for how long leaving the passengers unsure to what was happening. The driver was on his own no trolly dolly so no drinks offered and the toilet seemed to be out of service after a short time. This was further compounded by the onward journey from Preston to Carlisle having issues at Lancaster Services and Burton in Kendal Services which appeared to be lack of communication somewhere. So in total for a 10 hour journey in the end we only had a 45 minute break. It just felt like Legers duty of care finished at Stop 24 Folkestone but is the difference between a 5 star and 4 star holiday.

Our Drivers drove well. We were expecting more from Silver Service, information about the journey, a few more drinks, as most customers are elderly people, dropping us and picking us up more centrally on the excursions, less to walk and to see what shops were opened out of season; no porterage. Hotel Engel, Emmetten, Switzerland was good, helpful staff, accommodation, and food good, evening meals waited at table making it more enjoyable and sociable for the travellers. Glacier Express, a genuinely superior train on which to travel as an additional excursion . Jungfrau Regional Railway as included excursion was good. Free time spent near the train stop, we found a restaurant which made fondue and enjoyed this meal. Meiringen & Reichenbach Falls were interesting to see Sherlock Holmes fans; the Museum was open in the afternoon, so our Drivers made it possible to see this during hours. Out of season, there was not much open at Brienz except for the wood carver’s workshop which was interesting. The Funicular Railway was our first excursion of the holiday. Interlaken and Lucerne both had “little trains” which gave us an overview of these important cities. The optional cruise on the lake at Lucerne did not have any commentary so it was just a ride across the water. We enjoyed our holiday.
