Fly to Catania, where you will be met and transferred to your hotel in the Syracuse area. After dinner, we suggest a walk through Ortigia, the historical heart of Syracuse. Stroll through Greek temples, baroque churches, hidden gardens and courtyards, ending at the most beautiful square of Sicily.
We enjoy a guided tour of Syracuse’s most important archaeological area, including the Greek theatre, the Roman amphitheatre and the famous Dionysus Ear, then proceed to the House of Tellaro, a rich country residence of the late Roman Empire. Here you can admire the decorations made entirely of mosaic. We continue to Agrigento, where we enjoy a guided visit to the imposing Valley of the Temples. We stay overnight in Agrigento.
Depart for Marsala, built on the ancient site of the Punic city Lilibeo and well known today for the production of Marsala wines. We later drive along the Salt Route, with its picturesque windmills in the Trapani area, where we will make a photo stop, then continue to Segesta, with a visit to the Doric Temple from the 5th century B.C., built by the famous architect of his time, Elimi. We stay for two nights in Palermo.
Visit Palermo, the island’s splendid capital. Our included tour with local guide will show you around the most famous sights, including the cathedral, the Palatine Chapel, and the Cathedral of Monreale with its prestigious mosaics, the most impressive and extensive area of Christian medieval mosaics in the world.
Head to Cefalù, to visit the traditional fishing village whose Norman cathedral dominates the skyline, then to Castelbuono, a medieval town with a 14th century church. Continue to the Acireale area for a three-night stay.
A day of wonders on our included excursion to brooding Mount Etna, one of the world‘s largest and most active volcanoes – its lava-walled crater and smouldering potholes are a breathtaking reminder of the power of nature. Afterwards, we visit Taormina, a picturesque town overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. Enjoy free time in this charming town with its winding streets, fashionable shops, cosy cafés and tempting restaurants.
Join our fascinating optional excursion built around the classic Godfather film, We head first to a small town set on the hillside of the foothills of the S. Peloritiani. This is where Al Pacino and the cast shot some of the scenes from the film. A ‘must’ is a stop at the famous bar ‘Vitelli’ on the corner of the town, one of Coppola‘s favourite spots, and seen many times throughout the film. From Savoca you will visit Forza d’Agrò which is one of the best examples of a typical village of the Province of Messina and still conserves its medieval street layout. On all sides of the town you have the most incredible views.
