The Dordogne is region of stunning natural beauty. Medieval villages seemingly cling to hillsides and cliff faces; castles tower above lush green riverbanks; rolling vineyards; awe-inspiring caves; this is a region steeped in history and legend. Our base, Rocamadour is an important place of pilgrimage and enjoys a dramatic setting, built into the cliff-face overlooking the Alzou Gorge. Medieval houses line the narrow cobbled streets and the town retains much of its old-charm and character.
We head to the Remembrance village of Oradour-sur Glane, which has been left as untouched, since the German SS massacre of around 600 inhabitants in WWII. A stroll around the empty streets of this silent monument is a very moving experience. We continue to Rocamadour for a four-night stay.
This morning we include a guided tour of medieval Rocamadour, discovering many of its delights, including the monastery and castle. In the afternoon we visit Gouffre de Padirac, a spectacular cave complex within the limestone plateau of the Causse de Gramat. We descend underground by lift and later enjoy a short boat trip on the river.
Join our optional full day excursion around the Lot Valley. We first visit Cahors, which is situated on a loop of the Lot River. The town’s long and sometimes turbulent past, is best represented in its architecture, with Gallic, Roman, Moorish and English influences. Explore the old town with its ancient quarters and cobbled streets, and see the medieval Pont Valentre which spans the River Lot. We continue to the beautiful village of Saint-Cirq-Lapopie, with its commanding position above the Lot Valley. A member of ‘Les Plus Beaux Villages de France’, the stone and half-timbered houses tumble over the cliff side. Head up the steep path to where the town’s château once stood for wonderful views over the river valley.
Included full day excursion, exploring more of the Dordogne. We start with a visit to Sarlat, one of the most beautiful towns in the region. Explore the maze of narrow lanes and winding medieval cobbled streets, which remain virtually unchanged since the Middle Ages. We continue to the town of Beynac, whose castle is one of the finest in France, and Beynac is a favoured haunt for artists.
