Walking in the Austrian Tyrol

From your base in Niederau, enjoy invigorating walks amidst the spectacular scenery of the Austrian Alps. Accompanied by a local guide, you'll be part of a small group of walkers, as you journey through some of the most amazing natural scenery in Europe. All the walks are arranged by the Wildschönau Tourist Board, and different grades of walk are available for you to choose, from steady mountain walks, to hikes with steeper climbs and descents. This really will be a memorable holiday with a great like-minded people.

Itinerary

The walks are subject to change depending on the time of year. The below itinerary is valid for the main summer months.

Local departure by coach or Door-to-Door service, then to Belgium for an overnight stay.

After breakfast, we travel on south through the rolling countryside of Germany, to take the superb 4-lane autobahn through the Alpine foothills to the Austrian border. Now surrounded by the true mountains of the Alps, we continue to our hotel where we stay for six nights.

Take the cable car up to the Markbachjoch (1500m).Here you have a magnificent view of the steep peaks of the Wilder Kaiser and the Wildschönau with its four church villages. The fantastic mountain panorama invites you to take a break at one of the alpine pastures, which are known for their good home cooking. Descent with the cable car. Don’t forget a packed lunch and plenty to drink.

High Pastures on the Rosskopf

This hike focuses on alpine life. We start at the Markbachjoch and hike to the Käsealm. On the way there, we learn a lot about the busy summer on the alp and cheese production. Past small moor lakes, the narrow mountain path leads us to the Vordere Feldalm. Strengthened after an alpine snack, we continue our hike and reach the rustic Breiteggalm. Once there, we will hear many interesting facts about the coexistence of humans and animals during the summer. The walk ends at the largest Alm in the region, the Schonanger Alm from where we take a local bus or taxi (own cost) back to our starting point. Don’t forget a snack and plenty to drink.

Alm to Alm

Join our optional excursion by coach to Innsbruck combined with a trip onboard the Nordkettenbahnen, or a walk on Filzmoos moor. The easy hike is also well suited for families. The high moor lies at 1000 m.The "Filzmoos" on the Niederau Bruggberg is an extensive area of raised bog and offers us insights into the fascinating flora and fauna of this biotope. Very close to the high moor there is also a deer park where we can watch deer. We enjoy our stop and the view of the Brixental mountains from the terrace of the Foisching snack station. Don’t forget a packed lunch and plenty to drink.

Filzmoos High Moor

Our optional excursions are a great addition to enhance your holiday experience and are highly recommended.

Prices are per person and are subject to change. Payment will be in Euros (cash payments only).

This walk takes us from Mühltal over green meadows and forest paths to the remote village of Thierbach. After a circular walk we come to the majestic Hörbighof, where we enjoy a stop and possibly the loveliest view of the valley. We return on the same route. Don’t forget a packed lunch/snack and plenty to drink.

From the tourist office we walk in the direction of the Niederauer Sonnberg until we arrive at the organic Diendlhof farm, where Sonja is waiting for us. She will give us insights into the exciting life of the busy bees. Don’t forget a packed lunch and plenty to drink.

The guided walks are operated by the Wildschönau Tourist Board and are divided into two categories.

The two walking categories are:

Cat. A - Easy mountain walk of approx 2 to 3 hours without considerable altitude differences.

Cat. B - Mountain hike of on average 3 to 4 hours with extended and partially steep climbs and descents. A good fitness level is required.

Please note all walks are subject to change. Transfers to start/end points are extra (approx. €15 for a weekly unlimited travel ticket on the little road train). Cable car/chairlift rides, where required, are payable locally.

You will be required to take the following equipment: Light sportswear, good walking boots (preferably above the ankle), sun protection (hat, sun cream, sun glasses), rainwear, plenty to drink, light snack such as fruit or muesli bars and/or packed lunch.

Accommodation

You will stay for six nights at the 4-star Hotel Sonnschein in Niederau.

Overnight stays in Belgium are in city-style hotels.
