Enjoy free time in Edinburgh. Often referred to as the ‘Athens of the North’ and, because it was built on seven hills, likened to Rome, Edinburgh is indeed a classical city in its own right. Overlooking the Old Town is the massive castle, with its commanding view of the city and surrounding countryside, including the Firth of Forth. The almost chaotic layout of the Old Town is in complete contrast to the northern part of the city built in Georgian times and reflecting the great architectural characteristics of that period. Laid out to a grand design, the New Town has wide streets and elegant squares and is bordered to the south by Princes Street Gardens and to the north by Queen Street Gardens. Highlights include the Royal Mile, the Palace of Holyrood and Sir Walter Scott Monument.

We head to our overnight hotel in the Glasgow area.

Brendan the coach driver made this trip extra special by adding in extras like seeing Loch Ness or going up the Aviemore viaduct. He was knowledgeable, cheerful and so helpful. Certain things I would change like the trip to Isle of Skye. As you went to Inverness by train then a quick 15 min visit to Isle of Skye and then back by coach. It would have been much better to stay a night there and come back the next day. I think the food at a balavil hotel in Newtonmore could be improved ~small portions. Also a lack of choice of food for my lactose intolerant husband as all he could have is fruit for a starter and desert! So not value for money! On checking the hotel had not been informed of this despite me putting it in my booking form. My group and I were also very disappointed with the first day. Very early flight so was at the hotel in Glasgow early to mid day but could not check in until after 3pm! It meant an extra cost to go into Glasgow for something to do!

On arrival at the Avonbridge hotel we arrived about 11am we were told we could not get into our room until 4pm that was fair enough but there was no tea or coffee making facilities in the lounge area, also the bed in our room was quite small and uncomfortable. The staff were friendly but overall would not choose to stay there again. The hotel at Kingussie was very good the hotel staff were very friendly and the breakfast and evening dinner was very good with a good choice of meals. The coach was not designed for touring as the seats were quite uncomfortable after an hour or so of touring.the trip to Skye was very disappointing as the Scotrail train was 2 hour journey and the seating quite cramped, once on Skye there was nothing there except for a restaurant and a few houses.I feel a trip to Loch Lomond would have been a better option. The driver/guide was very knowledgeable and very helpful. before booking with Leger again i would do a lot more research with other tour operators. the trip to Edinburgh was a long and tiring day. Having not been before it would have had a quick orientation tour on the coach and some information about where to pick up the hop on /off bus.Admitedly our day was different as it was King Charles coronation and it was possible to watch on the big screen.
