About the Tour

The romantic Danube river known as the ‘blue’ river meanders its way through central Europe, passing famous cities such as Salzburg, Passau, Vienna, Budapest and unforgettable scenery, with free time at some of these places along the way. You will also have chance to see some more unforgettable places on our optional visits to Krimml Falls the firth highest waterfall in the world, Kitzbühel originally an mining town now famous for its skiing and guided sightseeing tours of Salzburg, Vienna and Bratislava. We also pass by Greinburg Castle and Kuenringer Castle and have visits to the towns of Melk and Durnstein which both have a deep history waiting for be explored.

Today we offer an optional excursion to Krimml Falls, where the Krimml River thunders down over 1000 feet. These magnificent falls are widely regarded as some of the best in Europe. At 380 metres, the cascading waterfalls of Krimml create the longest free fall of water in Europe and the fifth highest in the world. There will be time at leisure to walk alongside the lower falls. We continue to the internationally-renowned resort of Kitzbühel. In its heyday, mining began here in 1450 but it wasn’t until the 16th century that silver was found. The city’s landscape is a consequence of that wealth. The town is nestled between the mountains of Kitzbühel Horn and the Hahnenkamm. In 1893 Franz Reisch became the first man to ski down from the Kitzbühel Horn after which, the first ski race was held in Kitzbühel. You will have free time to explore the walled Old Town before departing for back to your hotel for your evening meal.

Join our included excursion to Salzburg one of the most beautiful cities in Austria and the city of Mozart. Admire the baroque splendour of the churches and cathedral, the might of the Hohensalzburg fortress and also the quaint Getriedegasse, which with its wrought iron signs that overhang the doors, is one of the most beautiful shopping streets of Austria. Salzburg is also known as the ‘Sound of Music’ city and during our tour you will see many sights featured in the film including Mirabell Gardens where Maria and the children sang ‘Do-Re-Mi’. A visit to Salzburg would not be complete without a mention of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and before the tour is over we see his former birth-house and also the square that is named after and dedicated to the famous composer. You can spend free time exploring independently or join our optional, guided walking sightseeing tour which will take in the many sights and attractions of this famous city.

To Passau, picturesquely set where the Danube is joined by the Inn and Ilz rivers. Passau is known as the Three River city and is overlooked by the Veste Oberhaus which is an 13th century hilltop fortress. The Veste Oberhaus is home to the city museum and observation tower. The area offers many attractions for you to explore in your free time before we board our cruise ship, the MS Serenity and begin our seven-night cruise, on the Danube passing through Linz.

From the river you see Greinburg Castle and the ruins of Kuenringer Castle. Early morning arrival in the picturesque town of Melk, where you can visit the 11th century abbey in your free time this morning. Melk Abbey is considered to be the finest Baroque church north of the Alps and is famous for its twin towers surmounted by helm roofs. There are many other attractions to visit in Melk including the Old Town with its squares and museums. Around lunchtime we sail eastwards through the wine-producing area of the Wachau past Durnstein and Krems. We arrive in Vienna later this evening.

Spend the whole day in Vienna. Vienna has so much to offer from historical buildings and monuments to fine shops. Vienna is Austria's capital and has been shaped by many famous residents including Mozart, Beethoven and Sigmund Freud. Vienna is known for its Imperial buildings like the Schönbrunn and Habsburgs summer home so why not explore independently or join our optional sightseeing tour where a local guide shows you the city and sights. We then return to the ship and set sail early evening and cruise overnight to Budapest.

We arrive in Budapest after our overnight sailing in the mid morning. Today we will meet our guide for an included sightseeing tour of the city, by coach and on foot. Our guide will explain the history of the city with its two independent communities of Buda and Pest as well as pointing out the attractions of this beautiful city. Once you have finished the guided sightseeing tour and have an idea of what else you would like to see and do you can then spend the rest of the day enjoying the delights of the city.

You can explore the city independently or join our optional, guided sightseeing tour by coach and on foot. Our guide will point out some main attractions and places of interest which you may not know about before hand. We leave later this afternoon and cruise towards Dürnstein.

We arrive in Dürnstein early morning with some free time to explore the area or enjoy a leisurely morning on board the ship. It was here that Richard the Lionheart (King Richard I of England) was kept captive and imprisoned in Castle Dürnstein by Leopold V, Duke of Austria after their dispute during the Third Crusade. After lunch on board, we set sail for our final overnight sailing. Tonight, enjoy the Captain’s Farewell Dinner on board.

We believe that our holidays may not be suitable for children under 8 years old (except for Disneyland Paris bookings) however, we will consider individual requests on application. You will spend seven nights cruising on the 3-star superior MS Serenity. Cabin accommodation is on three decks: main, middle and panorama. There is a lounge, bar, restaurant and sun deck. All cabins have twin beds, en suite facilities with shower and a safe.

Hotels 

You will stay for three nights at the 4-star Hotel Sonnschein in Niederau. The hotel is owned by the Thaler, who have been welcoming Leger guests for many years. The hotel has a terrace, restaurant and indoor swimming pool.

We are unable to guarantee that the hotel will be able to meet your dietary requirements. We find that the majority of European countries do not generally cater for vegetarians and that the meal supplied may well be what everyone else is having minus the meat.

We will of course endeavour to arrange for a vegetarian meal at the hotel. We do however suggest that you advise us of your dietary requests at the time of booking and recommend that you speak to the receptionist on arrival with regard to your request.

Travel Information

Departure times given for each region are approximate. Please check your travel documents to confirm the actual timings.

Front row seats can be reserved for £14pp (up to 6 days duration), £22pp (7 & 8 days duration) and £25pp (9 days duration and over) on all European tours. In addition to this seats on the second row can be reserved for £7pp (up to 6 days duration), £14pp (7 & 8 days duration) and £15pp (9 days duration and over). This offer is only available for bookings of two or four persons on the front row and is subject to availability. Guaranteed front/second row seats cannot be reserved on transfer journeys to/from the U.K. interchange. Children under 15 years cannot occupy a front row seat due to French Law.

Please note: On some coaches the legroom on front seats may be slightly less than that available on other seats due to the presence of a modesty board in front.

If your tour is cancelled for any reason and front/second row seats are not available on your new tour you will be refunded the supplement. No other compensation will be payable.

Alternatively, we can take seating requests on your booking. However, requests are not guaranteed. All seat numbers are confirmed on travel documents approximately 7-10 days prior to departure.

We guarantee that all passengers on the same booking will be seated together on the main tour coach. Seats on the transfer coaches to and from the U.K. interchange are not allocated.
Hot and cold drinks are served on the main tour coaches. Prices are between £1/1.25 Euros and £3/3.75 Euros per drink. Prices will be confirmed by the driver. Drinks may also be served on the transfer coaches but this is not guaranteed.

Transfer coaches are routed approximately 2-3 weeks before departure and will depend on where passengers are booked to travel from on any particular date as to which route is taken. If you require further detailed information regarding the route to the port you can contact our Customer Service Department on 01709 830333 two weeks before you are due to travel.

With regard to the route taken by the main tour coach, this is determined by the driver.

All main tour coaches have on-board toilets. Transfer coaches to and from the U.K. interchange may not have on-board toilets. When non-British coaches are used on transfers and air holidays, an on-board toilet may not be available. However, comfort stops will be made during long journeys.
All coaches feature air-conditioning. Should the air-conditioning system break down for a period exceeding 12 hours, compensation will be awarded up to a maximum of £10 per fare-paying passenger per tour.
We operate a passenger interchange at Stop 24 Services near Folkestone. Transfer coaches, including taxis, minibuses, Megabus and National Express, operate to and from the U.K. interchange. You will join your main tour coach at the interchange.
One medium sized suitcase per person, which should weigh no more than 20kg when full. We may refuse to carry larger or heavier cases. Hand luggage can be stored in the overhead racks aboard the coach.
