Enjoy a short break combining the splendid house and gardens of Claude Monet, inspiration for so many of his paintings, with a full day in Paris and visits to spectacular chateaux. Spend a full day in the capital city of Paris, where you can explore the ‘city of love’s’ most famous sights, from the Eiffel Tower, to the Notre Dame. Experience a traditional Parisian evening, where you’ll be treated to a meal in a fabulously French restaurant. On this splendid holiday, you can visit three of the country’s most famous Châteaux, Château de Fontainebleau, Château de Vaux Le Vicomté and the Château of Versailles, with its stunning gardens. Speaking of gardens, we visit arguably one of the most famous gardens of all time, as we travel to Giverny, to explore the garden and home of the famous artist, Claude Monet.
Local departure by coach, then to the Paris area to our 4-star hotel for a four-night stay.
Paris & Paris by Night
Included, full-day visit to Paris. To make sure you see the major sights, join our optional, guided sightseeing coach tour which takes in sights such as the famous Eiffel Tower, Arc de Triomphe, Champs Élysées, and Place de la Concorde. Later, you can enjoy a different view of the city on our optional hour-long River Seine Cruise, as you sail past elegant buildings and under the bridges for which Paris is justly proud. This evening, be sure to take advantage of our optional visit into the Latin Quarter (a bustling area of restaurants, cafes and souvenir shops to the south of the Ile de la Cité and Notre Dame) where you can enjoy the atmosphere and sample the local bars and restaurants.
Versailles & Monet’s Garden
We travel to the splendid Château and Gardens of Versailles. Located on the western outskirts of Paris and originally created for Louis XIV, admire the magnificent gardens or château from this once opulent era. (Chateau entrance is at extra cost. Chateau entrance is subject to local queueing times). Enjoy a relaxing stroll through the gardens, or along Versailles own Grand Canal, or why not discover the many fountains and pools, some of which are examples of fine sculpture. Please note that you will have time to visit either the gardens, or the Chateau at Versailles. From Versailles we continue to the village of Giverny in Normandy to visit the home of Claude Monet. The artist lived here from 1883 until his death in 1926, and today his house and in particular the gardens, made famous by his painting of the water lilies, have been restored to Monet’s original designs. His gardens, stretching from his house down to the river, provided the inspiration for many of his famous paintings, such as the series of ‘Nympheas’ or Water Lilies and his ‘Pont Japonais’ or Japanese Bridge, which has also been rebuilt for visitors to enjoy. This evening you will have the opportunity to join our optional ‘Paris by Night’ excursion and enjoy a three-course meal with house wine included.
Fontainebleau & Vaux Le Vicomte
We begin our day with a visit to the imposing Château de Fontainebleau. Delightfully situated in the heart of one of France’s most beautiful forests and surrounded by an impressive garden, the Château is a former hunting residence of the former French monarchy. Dating from the 12th Century, there is a large variety of architectural and decoration styles evident, although it is probably King François I’s Renaissance influence that is most evident today. The Chateau has also played an important role in French history; it is here that Louis XIV signed the revocation of the Edict of Nantes in 1685, Pope Pius VII was imprisoned (1812-14), and Napoleon signed his first abdication (1814). This afternoon we make the short journey to what many consider to be the most impressive palace in France, the Château de Vaux-le-Vicomte. The Château was built in 1658-61 for Nicholas Fouquet, a Royal advisor to Louis XIV. Designed by various French masters, including Le Nôtre and Le Brun, Fouquet was jailed over the King’s alleged jealousy of the Chateau’s splendour and Versailles was commissioned by Louis XIV by the same artists who created Vaux. Entrance to Fontainebleau and Vaux is included. There is a local fee of approximately €3 to visit the Dôme at Vaux le Vicomte (panoramic view from the top of the chateau).
