Beijing, Jing for short, is a metropolis in northern China and the capital of the country. Lying 70 mi (102 km) west of the Bohai Sea, it borders Hebei Province to the north, west, south, and a small section in the east, and Tianjin to the southeast. This city is a major transportation hub, with dozens of railways, roads and motorways passing through. It is also the destination of many international flights arriving in China, and is regarded as the political, educational and cultural centre of the country.

With a history of more than 3000 years, it has been an integral part of China's past. There is scarcely a major building that doesn't have at least some national historical significance. Being the capital of China for around 850 years, it is one of the four Great Ancient Capitals of China, and offers a wonderful array of attractions. No other city in the nation attracts more travellers!

Cloisonné, French for 'cell', is where thin wires are applied to form raised barriers, which contain different areas of enamel applied above the original metal form. An ancient metalworking technique, it is a multi-step enamel process used to produce jewellery, vases and other decorative items.

Lunch will be allocated in a local Chinese restaurant in the wall area. In the afternoon, we will visit the Summer Palace, which was the summer resort of the Qing royal family. Now it is the most intact, best-preserved and largest of its kind of classical gardens in the country.

Xi'an, located in central-northwest China, records the great changes of the country, just like a living history book. Called Chang'an (meaning the eternal city) in ancient times, it is one of the birthplaces of the ancient Chinese civilisation in the Yellow River basin area.
