The magnificent 14th-century Gothic Town Hall that dominates the Grand’Place, and the richness of the surrounding Baroque buildings, give us an opportunity to talk about the origins of Brussels. We will descend Coudenberg Hill, from the Palace of Justice and its fantastic 19th-century architecture, to the Place du Grand Sablon. We will then visit the garden in the Place du Petit Sablon, the Frison Hotel designed by Victor Horta - one of the great Art Nouveau architects - the Gothic church of Notre Dame de la Chapelle where the artist Pieter Breughel the Elder is buried, and many other buildings spanning from the Middle Ages to the 19th century.

Place Royale is, and has always been, the seat of power. A visit underneath the square will reveal the archaeological remains of its mediaeval origins. The square itself consists of a handsome group of monuments and buildings, among which royal palaces from the Baroque era and later, the tower of the Courts of Justice, and some Art Nouveau buildings such as the Museum of Musical Instruments, previously the Old England department store.
