Take a flying start to meet your ship, the MV Esmerelda, in Cologne then set sail on our 9-day River Cruise down the Rhine, Moselle, Neckar and Main Rivers, right in the heart of Germany. Itinerary

Please note for navigational and passenger safety, the cruise company and the captain reserve the right to modify the cruise itinerary if necessary. Sailing times are dependant on how busy the numerous locks are. At some ports of call, a degree of walking will be involved to join our coach. Due to limited docking facilities, it may be necessary to dock alongside another ship to access the shore.

Fly out to Düsseldorf or Cologne/Bonn. Later we join our cruise ship, MV Esmeralda, for our seven-night cruise.

This morning, we cruise down the Rhine to reach Koblenz, where we join the Moselle. We arrive in Winningen early this afternoon. You can explore Winningen which is a wine-growing village with many narrow romantic alleyways and stunning house some covered in vines. The area is home to one of the steepest vineyards in Germany with an incline of 65% or join our optional excursion by coach to Cochem, ‘the pearl of the Moselle’. Cochem is a picturesque town spanning both sides of the river, with narrow streets and twisting alleyways lined with half-timbered houses, overlooked by the magnificent Reichsburg Castle. Cochem is the biggest town in the district and the Reichsburg Castle was first documented in 1130. The castle was once an Imperial castle as in 1151 King Konrad III named it as his home. Why not visit the castle or enjoy one of the many cafes which offer a wide range of local pastries and cakes.

Cologne

We rejoin the Rhine and enjoy a leisurely day cruising along this majestic river. Take in the passing scenery of fairy tale castles, steep vineyards, pretty villages. We cruise through the Rhine Gorge and past the famous Loreley Rock where it is said that a siren of the river was betrayed by her sweetheart, and her beautiful song can be heard by passing sailors that then investigate to their misfortune as the siren calls them too close to this narrow and strong flowing part of the river, then arriving in Rüdesheim this afternoon. In Rudesheim you can visit the famous Drosselgasse and enjoy a beer or a glass of the local wine in one of the many bars and taverns. Why not join our highlights of Rudesheim optional excursion which includes the Winzer Express land train to transport you into the village and then we enjoy a visit to Siegfried’s Mechanical Music Museum, where you can see one of the largest collections of self-playing mechanical musical instruments. Your guide will tell you about the various instruments and you will have the chance to listen to many of the instruments and fairground organs play their different tunes.

Leaving Rüdesheim early this morning, we arrive this afternoon in Heidelberg. Heidelberg has lots of attractions to see such as the famous castle/palace and apothecary museum, the castle/palace is now partially destroyed however the grounds can be accessed on foot or funicular railway (fee) for brilliant views of the town (castle/palace entrance at additional cost), its 18th century streets that are lined with shops and the brass monkey that sits on the end of the Heidelberg bridge gate. The bronze sculpture by Professor Gernot Rumpf was installed there in 1979 and is said to be linked to a poem by Martin Zeiller from 1632. Heidelburg is on the stunning banks of the River Neckar. So explore the old town and browse the shops and boutiques of the bustling Hauptstrasse.

Rudesheim

We leave Heidelberg and cruise along the Rhine to the historic riverside city of Worms, forever associated with Martin Luther who was declared a heretic in the 16th century. Worms is twined with many places from around the world including St Albans, England. See St. Peter’s Cathedral, a magnificent example of Romanesque architecture and Nibelungenlied Bridge. We later continue our cruise to Mainz, strategically situated at the confluence of the Rhine and Main rivers.

Worms

We continue our cruise along the Main river to Frankfurt. Known as 'Main-hattan' due to its incredible skyline of skyscrapers, Frankfurt also boasts an historic old quarter, home to one of the most beautiful town halls in Germany. After shopping and sightseeing, spend time on the riverside, watching the passing boats. Frankfurt has over 30 museums covering films, art, world cultures, sculptures and architecture so there is always something interesting to go and see. Frankfurt is also home to two major botanical gardens Palmengarten which is located on the westend district with over 22 hectares and Bontanischer Garten de Goathe-Univeritat which is the university garden with over 5000 species which are both 20 minutes away on local transport.

Frankfurt-am-Main

We rejoin the Rhine and cruise past pretty wine villages, later passing Koblenz and Bonn, arriving in Cologne later this evening. Cologne has many stunning attractions such as Cologne Cathedral which is a Gothic style church that they started building in 1248 but didn't fully completed till 1880, or the Cologne City Hall which was once a medieval house still used today for official business and the relaxing water front and bridges which has helped build Cologne through the ages to the city we know today.

Accommodation

You will stay for seven nights on the MV Esmeralda. Cabin accommodation is on two decks: main and promenade. There is a lounge with bar, restaurant and sun deck. All cabins have twin beds, en suite facilities with shower, picture window and a safe. The MV Esmeralda has a lift between the main deck and the promenade deck, and a stair lift between the promenade deck and the sun deck.
