The tour was off to a bright start as we were welcomed aboard a beautifully decorated coach by our drivers Paul and Anthea. The fairy lights and tinsel chains made for a very Christmassy feel to the trip.

We were lucky to catch the earlier ferry which resulted in a not-too-late arrival at Valkenburg. The hotel was attractively situated at the corner of the main square and the staff were very welcoming. The light supper we were promised turned out to be soup followed by an extensive salad bowl. This set the tone for the meals throughout the trip - a varied menu and often artistically presented.

Valkenburg is an attractive town with many old buildings and overlooked by a massive ruined castle. It lies in a little pocket of The Netherlands close to the German border. The two included excursions took us over that border, firstly to Aachen and then to Monschau - both iconic medieval towns with much to explore and delight. I understand the optional trip to the Rhine/Moselle valleys was also much enjoyed. As I had been to these places on a number of occasions I chose to take a short trip to Maastricht on the local train - a fascinating city well worth exploring.

Overall this was a very interesting tour and at this time of year was enhanced by the Christmas decorations and a grandstand view of the New Year fireworks from the hotel.
