Our included excursion takes us into the old salt mining region of the Salzkammergut Lakes, which has developed into one of the most popular destinations in Austria on account of its outstanding natural beauty. We visit the crystal clear Lake Mondsee, one of the largest lakes in the region and also one of the warmest. We spend time in the delightful and principle resort of Mondsee, located on the banks of the lake. Mondsee is home to the Basilica of St. Michael. This gothic former monastery is just as striking today as ever with its two towers stretching 52 meters high. The basilica reached international fame when the wedding scene, from the film ‘Sound of Music’ with Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer, was filmed inside. This is the reason why more than 200,000 people visit the church every year and make it one of the most photographed churches in the world. Almost every day a wedding takes places at the church, so don’t forget to applaud if the newlyweds emerge from the church whilst you’re there! We continue to St Gilgen, birthplace of Mozart’s mother and home to one of the most attractive town squares in Austria. Here you can stroll along the lakeside, explore the shops or relax in one of the cafes. We then take an included boat cruise on St. Wolfgangsee, one of the largest and most famous lakes of the Austrian Lake District, which lies in the heart of the region.

Spend a full day in the Imperial City of Vienna, which is without question, one of Europe’s great cities. As the home of the former Habsburg monarchy and the present day capital of Austria it has much to charm the visitor. There is a lot of walking involved to see all the sights, so why not let us introduce you to Vienna on our optional guided sightseeing tour. Our guided tour will begin by coach, where we will be taken along the Imperial Boulevard known as the Ringstrasse. Here you will see the Hofburg Palace, the Parliament building, the Opera House, National Theatre and City Hall. During our tour we will also see the majestic Danube River, and later as we pass by the Prater amusement park a chance to view the famous “Giant Wheel” built over 100 years ago, and today one of the most well-known landmarks of the city. There will be frequent stops during the drive, where you will have photo opportunities and the chance to admire Vienna at its very best. Our guide will provide commentary throughout, revealing the history; culture and stories of without question one of Europe’s most fascinating cities. Following the tour you will have time at leisure to visit many of the city’s famous landmarks, or you may decide to sit back and relax with a traditional Viennese coffee and a slice of the local “Sachertorte” chocolate cake in one of the cities tempting street cafes – the choice is yours! This evening we include a traditional meal in a 'Heuriger' (wine tavern).

A day at leisure or why not join our optional excursion to Lake Woerthersee. We start with a visit to the town of Velden on the shores of the Lake. Lake Woerthersee is considered to be Austria's best destination for bathing and swimming, with water temperatures averaging 21-23°C. It is apparently clean and safe enough to drink, at least in early June, before the thousands of swimmers arrive in the high season! The town of Velden has a long tradition as a relaxation and bathing resort. From here we cruise across the lake to Klagenfurt, the capital and cultural centre of Carinthia. The main attractions lie in the Neuer Platz, around the dragon-like Lindwurm Statue. The lindwurm is the town's landmark and according to a legend, an evil dragon infested the region where Klagenfurt is located today.

After breakfast we travel to Innsbruck on our included excursion. Innsbruck is the capital of the Tyrol, located on the River Inn and at the foot of the Karwendel Alps. It is the fifth largest city in Austria and is surrounded by stunning mountain scenery and steeped in history. To introduce you to the sights why not join our included sightseeing tour. Innsbruck was on two occasions the venue for the Winter Olympic Games and during our tour we see the Berg Isel Ski jump. A wonderful opportunity to marvel at the sights of the Tyrolean capital. Afterwards there will be free time for you to discover the old quarter with its charming arcaded streets, the famous Golden Roof, stroll along the Maria Theresien Strasse with its bustling shops or climb the Tower of the City for magnificent views of the city. Our optional excursion takes us over the scenic Gerlos Pass to Krimml Falls. These magnificent falls are widely regarded as some of the best in Europe. At 380 metres, the cascading waterfalls of Krimml create the longest free fall of water in Europe and the fifth highest in the world. There will be time at leisure to walk alongside the lower falls. Don’t forget your brolly, as even on the sunniest days there can be quite a lot of spray! Afterwards, we continue to the internationally renowned resort of the rich and famous, Kitzbühel. The heyday of mining began here in 1450 but it wasn’t until the 16th century that silver was found. The city’s landscape is a consequence of that wealth. The town is nestled between the mountains of Kitzbühel Horn and the Hahnenkamm. In 1893 Franz Reisch became the first man to ski down from the Kitzbühel Horn after which, the first ski race was held in Kitzbühel. You will have free time to explore the walled Old Town or you may wish to take a cable car ride up the mighty Hahnenkamm Mountain for some spectacular views of the region (at extra cost, payable locally). We return to the hotel later this afternoon in time for our evening meal.
