France - Food/Drink
Home of the croissant, frogs legs and snails, if you’re looking for a culinary experience, France is the right place for you.
It’s known the world over for its finesse and we’ve all heard of haute cuisine so here’s just a few of our top dishes top try in France.
Originating in the Côte d'Azur city of Nice, here’s the Salade niçoise. This mixed salad has definitely takes the title of tastiest salad. A mouth-wateringly combination of tuna, egg, tomatoes, anchovies, French beans and capers, the salad brings a whole new meaning of somewhat flavourless ingredients we’re used to.
If you’re looking for something that’s a bit heartier to start, you must try the Soupe à l'oignon. This may be onion soup, but with a healthy dose of croutons AND cheese on top, you certainly won’t be disappointed.
Another colourful dish of healthy goodness from the Côte d'Azur is the delectable ratatouille. Traditionally known as the farmer’s dish it’s appreciated for its tasty combination of summer vegetables of courgette, tomatoes, sweet peppers, aubergine, onion and a heap of herbs and garlic.
Looking for something sweet? Tarte Tatin may be right up your street. Made by mistake by Stephanie Tatin, it is said she was trying to bake a traditional apple pie when she left the apples in sugar in the pan for far too long. In an effort to salvage she placed a sheet of pastry over the top and put the dish in the oven. The results? One of France’s most popular deserts.
Of course, cheese and wine are almost the epitome of French cuisine. There really is a cheese for every taste, from melted camembert, to brie and Roquefort, you’ll come across an astounding selection of cheese as the French tend to serve cheese platters after their main meals. Don’t mind if we do!
Much like the cheese, there’s also a wine for every taste, from white, to red, rose and champagne, you’re sure to find a tipple to trust during your stay in France. However, they don’t stop there, with a list of spirits as long as their wine list, you are also in the home of Cognac, Armagnac, Cointreau, Benedictine and even Absinthe. A cocktail lover’s dream!
