Basel shares with Lucerne a reputation as one of the two best places in Switzerland to have fun at carnival. The fun kicks off on Carnival Monday with Morgenstreich. At 4am, the electricity of the city is turned off and the night is illuminated by the Cliquen - locals from designated Carnival Associations who carry torches through the streets of the city. The Carnival Queen is given the Carnival Sceptre in a solemn ritual and then everyone goes wild!
