"Having enjoyed many Leger holidays over the last 20 years, it is always reassuring as we board our holiday coach to know that we shall be well looked after by our two drivers and we immediately feel at home.

This was to be our third Christmas trip, which was a new one for Leger, with an extra special Christmas night and Boxing night.
Christmas Eve in Salzburg with its decorated Christmas market and ice skating rink, not to mention the warming hot gluhwein in pretty mugs, has a great atmosphere. We also had a very interesting and information tour with a local guide.

On Christmas day we were taken to St Wolfgang with its large lake and on Boxing Day, to the lovely old town of Berchtesgaden where the freshly falling snow enhanced their Christmas market.

The highlights of this holiday were Christmas night when we went to Mozart dinner concert in St Peter’s Monastery in Salzburg, where we dined in the Baroque Hall, which was once the Bishop’s Palace. It was very grand and beautiful and the hall was lit by sparkling chandeliers with candelabras on the many tables and a giant decorated Christmas tree beneath which the musicians sat and played Mozart’s music.

We were served a very interesting four course meal consisting of recipes from the 18th century and between each course a lovely young couple in costume sang arias and duets to us in a very light hearted amusing way. This was a wonderful evening of fun and music in a fantastic setting and was thoroughly enjoyed by all.

On Boxing night we again had dinner and a Mozart concert, but this time in the ancient Fortress Hohensalzburg towering over Salzburg. The meal was excellent, served in the lovely Wappensall after which the concert took place higher up in another part of the fort – the Burgsaal – from where we could see the bright lights of the town far below us. We found that you do not have to be a connoisseur of operatic and classical music to enjoy these evenings in such beautiful historic buildings.

We would highly recommend this particular Christmas holiday for the additional chance to experience two very special evenings in spectacular buildings.

Well done Leger – it was great!

"We have enjoyed many great summer holidays with Leger over the last ten years, so we decided to spend Christmas in Salzburg and try a winter Christmas holiday for a change. We were not disappointed as the holiday lived up to Leger’s usual high standards.

We were delighted to be travelling with Phil and Roddy, our drivers, who we had previously met on the fabulous ‘Fire and Ice’ tour’- they are a great team who always try to ensure that the group has a good holiday. This holiday was no exception, their great sense of humour and caring attitude ensured that the whole tour group, who turned out to be a great bunch, bonded together in no time at all.

We spent a full day on Christmas Eve exploring Salzburg, the ‘Sound of Music’ city, which is a lovely city with cobbled streets, stunning architecture and busy squares. The weather was unusually mild and we enjoyed taking a look around the large Christmas market and buying some last minute trinkets, before enjoying lunch in a lovely café located in one of the quaint cobbled side streets.

Returning for dinner at our hotel, we found that the staff had arranged a lovely surprise for the group, by asking us to decorate the Christmas tree and everyone joined in the fun. Christmas Day was a great treat which started with a trip to the Salzkammergut, Austria’s picturesque Lake District.

After visiting Mondsee and the beautiful Basilica of St Michael, famous for the wedding scene in ‘The Sound of Music’ where Maria married Georg von Trapp, we continued to St Gilgen, a lovely quaint town, where we boarded a boat to sail across the lake to St Wolfgang. The clear blue skies ensured that we were able to enjoy uninterrupted views of incredible scenery, which was certainly a highlight of the holiday. Our dinner this evening was served in the old Baroque hall of St. Peterskeller, in the oldest part of Salzburg. The old hall was decorated with a fabulous Christmas tree, window decorations and candelabras and the live Mozart concert , performed whilst we enjoyed dinner, helped to make the evening one to remember.

Boxing Day saw us cross the border into Bavaria to visit the spa town of Bad Reichenhall before continuing onto visit the town of Berchtesgaden. Once again, the weather was great and we enjoyed a lovely lunch, in a café in one of the squares before relaxing with a nice glass of wine. This evening’s entertainment was a spectacular dinner and concert in the fortress overlooking the city of Salzburg.

Altogether, the fabulous scenery, great company and memorable experiences we had, all helped to make Christmas in Salzburg one of the best holidays that we have experienced so far.
