Magical Markets of the Rhine Valley

What our previous travellers have to say about this tour

"A big thank you for a wonderfully hectic tour, not only of magical Christmas markets but of the beautiful Rhineland area in which they were held. There is absolutely nothing I can think of that could improve the tour in any way, it was indeed sheer magic.

I must express admiration of the planning of the tour, we were afforded a well-rounded selection of markets, from the pretty little one at Rudesheim to the huge collection of stalls in Frankfurt – and varying sizes between, all extremely enjoyable and full of atmosphere. What sights, sounds and smells! All our senses were stimulated, it was lovely to escape the blatant commercialism and to recapture the magic of childhood Christmases.

I cannot praise our drivers, Roddy and Phil too highly, not only did they keep us plied with liquid refreshment (especially “happy” or “wobbly” coffee to which we became almost addicted) and not only did they driver with great skill and care, they were most informative and kept us laughing. Each had a different delivery – Roddy with his grin, Phil with his deadpan delivery, both were great hosts and good fun. Oh and they kept the DVD player well-oiled with Christmas films. Well done Roddy and Phil!

Our hotel Alte Bauernschanke was magical too, my sort of place, being very old and full of character but with all the squeaky clean facilities one could wish for. We were given an excellent dinner menu each evening, all the food was beautifully presented and cooked to a turn. Our buffet breakfasts were plentiful, with good variety – even at 4.30am on our leaving day!

We really appreciated the musician who sang and played guitar and trombone to us on the Tuesday and Wednesday evenings, he was very talented and deserves praise. We found the hotel staff very pleasant, in fact everywhere we went, we found friendly, pleasant people who were kind and helpful and ready for a joke, we have always found this in Germany.

Once again, I was enchanted by the beauty of the Rhineland and its towns; Assmannhausen itself is gorgeous, steep twisty streets and “Hansel and Gretel” houses. Germans, like the Austrians, have such an eye for detail, windows and doors are not only a practical necessity they have decorative surrounds (architraves) usually painted to contrast with the wall, often beautifully carved and shaped. All in all it was a perfect break and start to Christmas. Many, many thanks!
