Brussels and Valkenburg Christmas Markets

What our previous travellers have to say about this tour

"Leger Christmas Market tours are an excellent way to start off the Christmas festivities..."

It has become something of a family tradition now that my husband and I, together with our niece and nephew, take a Leger Christmas Market tour in December. We chose the Brussels and Valkenburg tour, as we had not visited Brussels before and we all agreed it was one of the best yet!

Our tour began on the transfer coach, where the crew presented all travelers with a brochure giving all relevant information needed on a Leger tour, which, of course, was most useful for first time Leger travellers.

The crew on our tour coach were most attentive and informative all through the holiday, providing refreshments at regular intervals and offering details about places to be visited, such as directions and local transport. The coach itself was decorated with an extremely festive theme, especially in the lounge at the rear of the coach, of which passengers were encouraged to use and “mingle with fellow travellers”.

The hotel in Brussels was comfortable, clean, friendly and well situated for the town. The local tram stop was just outside the hotel for those less mobile, but the hotel was also within easy walking distance of the main part of the town itself - for all shops, bars and restaurants. To our amusement, we went to visit one restaurant on our first evening, only to be led across the cobbled street to another, as all the tables were taken, but from which our food was delivered - across the same street - to us seated in the second restaurant!

All four of us agreed the highlight of this tour was the visit to the Christmas Markets in Valkenburg, located in two caves in the town. The largest of these was huge, warm, well lit and magical and also great bargains were to be had from the large variety of goods available! The town itself was quaint and welcoming, again, with a wide variety of shops, bars and restaurants.
On the second day of the tour we chose not to take the optional trip to Bruges, as we had visited it a few times before but instead spent it the in and around Brussels, getting to find our way around, enjoying the various market locations and rounding the day off with the Festival of Lights in one of the main squares. We would not have known about the Festival of Lights had not one of the couriers given us the information, for which we were most grateful.

Leger Christmas Market tours are an excellent way to start off the Christmas festivities and we highly recommend them to all to enjoy the companionship on the coach, the holiday atmosphere, ease of travel as well as the shopping!

"The itinerary could be as busy or as relaxed as you wished depending on whether you decide to stick with the planned tours or go along for the optional ones also."

Having previously travelled with Leger Holidays and enjoyed their wonderful Christmas Market tours, we decided to holiday with them again to visit Brussels, Bruges and Valkenburg.

Bruges is such a quaint charming little place with beautiful architecture, canals and horse and carriages should you wish to take a ride through the picturesque streets. There is an abundance of chocolate shops and the air is filled with a sweet smell.

Brussels is a very diverse city and by night it lights up! The evening light display at Grand Place was definitely worth the wait. There are numerous Christmas market stalls selling crafts and mulled wine, to name but a few of the delights you may find!

Valkenburg was an absolute pleasure! The whole town seemed to come alive during the festive season and the Christmas cave markets were spectacular. You could easily lose yourself within the maze of stalls and shops, it was a surprise how big the caves actually were. There were even cosy bars inside should you wish for a thirst quenching beer to keep you energised! They are a definite must see for a unique Christmas market experience.

We travelled in the executive coach which was always clean and tidy and the Christmas decorations were a very nice touch. Our drivers, Mark and Sam, were always helpful and informative and provided some much enjoyed festive fun! They were a pleasure to spend time with as were the other people on the tour and everyone was always in high spirits.

We stayed at the Mercure Hotel Brussels Airport. The rooms were large and spotless, the staff helpful and friendly and the breakfasts plentiful. It was lovely to sit in the beautifully festive decorated restaurant at breakfast and talk with other members of our tour, exchanging tips and stories of our travels.

The itinerary could be as busy or as relaxed as you wished depending on whether you decide to stick with the planned tours or go along for the optional ones also. We went to Bruges as an optional excursion and were so pleased that we did as this ended up being our favourite of the places we visited, simply for its beauty and charm, not forgetting the mouth-watering Belgian chocolate!

This was the second time we had holidayed with Leger and again they exceeded our expectations. The trips are so well organised and the staff amazing. We will definitely be doing another Christmas Market tour this year and are spoilt for choice when it comes to destinations. We cannot praise Leger Holidays enough and would encourage anyone to give them a try.

"Our first tour with Leger to the Christmas markets was absolutely perfect. Brussels, Bruges and Valkenburg all have their own characteristics and are wonderful places to visit."

We travelled by Silver Service and having not been on a coach holiday before we were not sure what to expect. The seats were very comfortable with arm rests and plenty of leg room and we were offered hot or cold drinks throughout the whole journey which added a nice touch.

Our first full day started with an optional trip to Bruges for the morning. Bruges is a beautiful place in itself but having the Christmas themed shops and street decorations made it all the more special. We were given basic maps on the coach and Chris gave detailed directions of where to go.

We returned to the coach just after lunch where we made our journey to the Christmas markets in Brussels city centre for late afternoon arrival. Here we spent the rest of the day. The markets were absolutely amazing! The festive atmosphere, the lights, and the smell of mulled wine and roasted chestnuts…it felt just like Christmas!!

The next day we visited Valkenburg to see the much talked about and highly recommended Christmas markets in the Municipal cave. Chris informed us on the way that the caves get extremely busy and advised us to head off to the caves first as the queue gets longer and longer as the day goes on. She gave out the entrance tickets and detailed directions for our swift walk to the caves. It took a while to get into the caves but as soon as we entered we clearly understood why everybody wanted to go there … it was absolutely stunning!

There were what seemed to be at least a hundred independent stalls selling novelties, chocolates, Christmas gifts, decorations etc. … the list is endless! It took about two and a half hours for us to walk around the caves looking at all the stalls and buying lots of Christmas goodies. It was so good we were disappointed when we got to the exit!!

We then walked around the small town of Valkenburg where were lots of restaurants, cafes, bars etc. to choose from to have a rest and a bite to eat. The town was absolutely buzzing with people; it was such a friendly and welcoming town.
On the way back to the hotel Chris offered to take those of us who wanted to, back to Brussel’s for our last evening to visit the markets again and to pick up any last minute gifts and goodies.

Our first tour with Leger to the Christmas markets was absolutely perfect. Brussels, Bruges and Valkenburg all have their own characteristics and are wonderful places to visit. We would highly recommend anybody to visit these places at least once.

Chris and Gareth (the courier and driver) definitely made our holiday that extra bit special. As well as the friendly banter, the organisation of the whole trip and the shared knowledge of many places along the way, they made the whole experience first class.

We’ve already booked another Christmas market tour, this time to Germany and a have also booked a Spring break back to Bruges.
Having never travelled with Leger before and not even having been on a coach holiday, we will definitely be booking more holidays with Leger in the future knowing we will be travelling with a professional, friendly and well organised company.

Thank you Leger for this wonderful experience, but more importantly thank you Chris and Gareth for making our short break so enjoyable.
