Day 1

Local departure by coach

then to Ypres in Belgium for

a three-night stay.

Day 2

In Flanders Fields

Museum; Ypres

We start our tour

at the In Flanders Fields Museum in

Ypres. We then walk down to the

Menin Gate and see the Ramparts

of Ypres. After lunch at Hooge we

visit Yorkshire Trench, and then see

where the ‘Last Fighting Tommy’,

Harry Patch, fought in 1917, seeing

his memorial. At Langemarck we

look at the German dead in

Flanders and contrast this with

a visit to Tyne Cot; the largest

British Cemetery in the world.

We end the day at Frezenberg and

the Scottish Memorial.

Day 3

Passchendaele;

Messines Ridge

Today, we start

at Hill 60, with evidence of the

‘underground war’ and then visit the

Passchendaele Museum with its

system of re-created trenches. After

lunch, we travel to the Messines

Ridge, visiting the preserved craters

at St. Eloi and Spanbroekmoelen.

At Bayernwald we see a German

trench system, and in Messines we

visit the smallest British cemeteries

in Flanders, before looking at the

story of the Christmas Truce.

We end on Kemmel Hill, overlooking

Flanders.

Return home.

Day 1

Local departure by coach

Day 2

Mons: First Shots – War

Horses at Audregnies

We start

with the Battle of Mons and see

where the first shots were fired in

1914. At Nimy Bridge we look at the

first Victoria Crosses of WW1. After

lunch we travel to St. Symphorien

Cemetery where the first and last

casualties of WW1 are buried.

We end at Audregnies, scene of a

cavalry charge in 1914.

Day 3

Retreat From Mons –

Battle of Le Cateau

We start at

the Mons War Museum and then

follow the Retreat from Mons down

to Le Cateau. We look at Landrecies

and see the Suffolk Regiment

memorial. Later we visit Le Cateau

Cemetery and also Esnes.

Day 4

Ypres: Death of an Army

– In Flanders Fields Museum

We start at the Menin Gate and

walk to the Ypres town cemetery,

seeing 1914 burials. We then visit

the In Flanders Fields Museum.

After lunch at Hooge we see

Zillebeke Churchyard. In Messines

we see the visitor’s centre and

original church crypt ending with

the story of the Christmas Truce

near Prowse Point.

Return home.
