Operation Market Garden

What our previous travellers have to say about this tour

"I can’t speak highly enough of my experience with Leger and have already booked for another battlefield tour next year."

Mr Green

Having taken my first ever battlefield trip with Leger last year to Normandy I have just returned from another superb experience, this time to Arnhem on the Operation Market Garden tour. Once again our guide was outstanding, bringing to life the full story of the Bridge Too Far with his detailed knowledge and very informative walks which were illustrated with photographs and personal stories of heroism and tragedy.

Starting just inside Belgium we traced the advance of the armoured ground troops up through The Netherlands via Eindhoven, Grave and Nijmegen and their desperate attempt to try and reach the men at Arnhem bridge and discovered how the airborne assault unfolded, fought for every inch, faltered and was ultimately driven back. Along the way we stopped at various points to learn about each phase of the operation and to visit some excellent museums and outstanding military cemeteries. I found the sight of 34,000 crosses at the Ysselsteyn German cemetery and the graves of the Victoria Cross winners at the Arnhem/Oosterbeek cemetery, where our guide took the trouble to provide photographs of each man and read out each VC citation, particularly moving. The bridges at Grave and Nijmegen, and the museum at Overloon are also very impressive.

I travelled with my friend Alan and we both agreed that the hotels in Belgium and the Netherlands were of an excellent standard and very comfortable indeed. The Bilderberg Hotel at Wolfheze in The Netherlands was particularly well positioned in what was a pivotal area of the battle for Arnhem. I very much enjoyed its country location and the lovely village of Wolfheze itself. The hospitality of the hotel staff was first class.

The coach crew were brilliant and looked after us impeccably on what was a very enjoyable drive through France, Belgium and the Netherlands. The comfort of the coach meant that it never felt like a long journey and we always arrived refreshed at our destination.

I can’t speak highly enough of my experience with Leger and have already booked for another battlefield tour next year. Many thanks to all involved.
